Shri Krishna Bhaagavatam - First Leaf

(Poem of Lord Shri Krishna)

Prathama Dalam — First Leaf

[It was night previous to Shri Krishna Ashtami in 1999. Swami was sleeping under a tree in the front open place before His house and side by side father of Swami was also sleeping. In the early morning, at about 4.00 am, slight rain started. Father of Swami awoke and went in to the front verandah (foremost part of the house with roof) of the house to sleep, calling Swami also to get up. Swami also stood up to go into verandah. Suddenly, very bright lightning appeared. Lord Krishna appeared before Swami and embraced Swami for one hour and disappeared. Swami composed this prayer in Sanskrit verses throughout that Krishnaashtami day in eight parts (Dalams). We are presenting this here. All the Sanskrit scholars were astonished at the unimaginable beauty of this Sanskrit poetry. Swami gave English translation of this book on the desire of my parents. We are presenting it to devotees for the sake of bliss. — Aarshaa, D/o Dr. Nikhil and Smt. Devi]

1) Pinchhaavatamsah Purushovateernah, Suvarnavarnaambarabhaasamaanah,

Kanthe cha daamnaa tulaseedalaanaam, aalingya maamuttaraleekaaroti.

[One shining person having peacock-feather on the head, wearing bright golden cloth and a garland of tulasi leaves around the neck on the chest, came down and embraced Me by which I shivered due to bliss.]

2) Hemakshaumadharo gale cha tulaseehaarah kare venunaa,

Mugdhaangairnavaneetamaardavabharairaamuktamuktaasaraih,

Aalingannahamasmi maa shucha iti premaabdhikallolavat,

Koyam Shyaamayuvaa pratikshanamapi pratyakshamaabhaashate?

[Who is this young pale black person, wearing golden cloth, garland of tulasi leaves and flute in hand, with limbs of body as soft as butter, which are decorated by the chains of pearls appearing before Me every minute like Tsunami of love-ocean and embracing Me saying “don’t worry, I am here”?]

3) Aagatya paadadhvanikinkineeshu, muktaavaleebhuushanaghoshanaasu,

Maam vaadayan venumivaanyaruupam, nityam samaalingati konu neelah?

[Who is this pale black man embracing Me every minute after coming while the small bells of anklets and pearl chain-ornaments sound, making Me His flute expressing sweet sounds in the form of these verses?]

4) Ka esha muktaadharahaasadeedhitih, viraajamaanah purushah puro mama,

Tamaalavrukshah sphutapallavaantara-prakampichandaamshurivaaparah sthitah?

[Who is this man with shining smile on opened lips, radiating before Me, looking like a tender tamaala tree with tender leaves allowing the sunlight to come out between them?]

5) Paanipaadaakshibhistaamraih, neelah koyam mahodadhau,

Jalajairjalaneeleenaam, sanghaata iva sangatah?

[Who is this pale black person lying in mighty ocean with light red feet, palms and eyes looking like a mass of pale black water grass having some lotus flowers?]

6) Pinchhena neelakanthasya, makutoparishobhinaa,

Kanthe cha tulaseehaarah, kamaneeyah ka esha bhoh?

[I am asking again and again with big tone. Who is this beautiful person with bright peacock-feather on the top of crown on head and with garland of tulasi leaves around the neck on the chest?]

7) Na chintayaamo vishayaananantaan, aalochaneeyaanapi Vedaavaadaan,

Pratikshanam yat nalinaayataaksham, tamekameva pravilokayaamah!.

[Neither I am able to think important worldly issues nor several important Vedic discussions, which have to be resolved and correlated since I am concentrated every minute, to look that one person only, whose eyes are like big lotus flowers!]

8) Peetaambaram kaanchanatantu pashya, pashchaardhabhaagena ghanam vasaanam,

Tamindraneelojjvalaratnaraashim, suvarnapaatrasthamivordhvashesham!

[See Him with cloth made by golden threads, worn by Him below the waist, who is looking like blue diamonds placed in a golden vessel above which also the diamonds stand as upward heap!]

9) Kastvam prabho! chanchalapinchhamaule! Muhurmuhurmaamupayaasi mandam,

Praanaan katham dhaarayate janoyam, tvannetramugdhadyutimaakalayya?

[Who are you? O Lord! You are coming to Me, a stupid, every time with a vibrating peacock feather on Your head. After seeing the fascinating tender shining of Your eyes, how can this person (Myself) can maintain His life anymore?]

10) Mayyaashlesham, prapanne madhumadhumuraleenaadamodena saakshaat,

Leelaapinchhaavatamsam shirasi cha dadhataa svarnavarnaambarena,

Brahmaanandah samaadhau gunarahitaraso yo mayaa praapyate praak,

Sampratyaaptah sa eva hyanurapi na tato bhidyate satyamuktam.

[Whenever this Lord, happy in singing flute very sweetly, having stylish peacock feather on the head and wearing golden cloth, appears and embraces Me, I am getting the same divine bliss beyond this creation, which was obtained by Me whenever I entered Samaadhi (state of absorption in God) of the absolute unimaginable God. I am telling truth (This means that the incarnation of unimaginable God is unimaginable God Himself due to total merge.).]

11) Krishna! Govinda! Gopaalaa!, Gopeelola! Guruuttama!

Naaraayana! namaami tvaam, smaraami tvaamaharnisham.

[Oh! Krishna! Govinda! Gopaala! Gopeelola (fascinated towards Gopikaas) Guruuttama! (top most preacher) Naraayana! I always salute and always remember You day and night.]

12) Adhunaa lokavruttaantaih, alamasmaasu kunthitaih,

Madhusuudanapaadaabja—madhunaa vayamunmadaah.

[Enough with these worldly issues, which are failing to enter our mind. We are mad after drinking the sweet divine nectar of the feet-lotus flowers of Lord Madhusuudana.]

13) Na chittabhramo naapi tejassvaruupam, na Saakhaatkrutih kevalaa duuratashcha,

Mayaalingito gaadhamaalingamaanah, kimanyatpramaanam prabho! Pinchhamaule!

[This incident is neither an illusion of My mind, nor He is in energetic form, nor He appeared far from Me. He, as materialized form embraced Me strongly and I also embraced Him strongly. O Lord, having peacock-feather on head! What more authority I can give other than this for this vision?]

14) Shlokah kopi mayaa na hanta likhito vyarthaaksharopyantaraa,

Saakshaat taamanubhuutimatra samaye chandoganaadyashrame,

Yuuyam nishchinuta svayam sahrudayaah shlokairimairmaamakah,

Pinchhaalankrutashekharah sa cha mayaa saakshaatkruto vaa na vaa.

[Even while practicing the writing of poetry in various meters in Sanskrit in the beginning, I never wrote a single verse without practical experience. Oh scholars! You understand the nature of poetry. You yourselves decide on observing these verses that whether I have written these verses with practical experience or not and whether My Lord having peacock-feather on head has appeared to Me or not.]

15) Utpaadya kaavyaih kavitaashriyam taam, Saahityasindhormathanena puurvam,

Krishnoddhrutaah shailajadaashchiraaya, lakshyaamrutam Bhaagavatam bhajaamah.

 [We have generated the poetry-Lakshmi to be given to Lord through several epics by churning Sanskrit literature-ocean. We are inert like the Mandara-hill used in churning and we are supported by Lord Krishna always. Now, finally, we have obtained this epic, which is the divine nectar, our final goal.]

16) Kaavyaih prakrutimaaraadhya, purusham samprati stumah,

AnuuhyaBrahmabhaavastu, kadaachidapi nohyate.

[We have written several epics in Sanskrit in which we worshipped this creation (prakruti). Now, we praise the creator (Purusha). The idea about absolute unimaginable God can never be even imagined by anybody at any time.]

17) Bhobho! nirguna nishkriyaatmarasikaah vedaantavruddhaah vidhah!

Saashtaangapranataah gruhaani bhavataam draakpaavayantu svayam,

Saa neelaa Yamunaa cha tattatavanam neelamcha brundaavanam,

Tasmin neelamanirnidhirmama Harih pradhvamsabhaavaaya vah!

[Oh Scholars! You are ripened in philosophy about God without attributes, without activity and existing as your souls. I salute all of you falling on your feet. Please leave Me and go to your homes and make them holy by your presence. You people say that blue Yamuna river, that blue forest on the banks of Yamuna, called as Brundavanam and that blue diamond in Brundavanam called as Hari are unreal!]

18) Maa maa punargamaya nirguna satchidaatma-jnaanaatapena salilam priyakrishnaruupam.

Kruchchrena saadhitamidam kila bhaktisheetaih, vaatairghaneekrutahimasphatikam dayaardram.

[Oh! Devotees of attribute-less God! Please don’t again dilute this form of beloved Krishna into water by your knowledge-Sunlight of attribute-less God, who is mere existing awareness as your souls. After several difficulties, we have got this crystallized form after solidification of attribute-less God by our devotion-cold winds, who is still wet with kindness.]

19) Sphuratpravaalaadharavenunaadaat, mayuurapinchham makute dadhaanaat,

Krishnaavataaraadaparam sakhe! Kim, vilokaneeyam cha vichintaneeyam?

[Oh friend! Tell Me, Which form is to be seen and to be memorized other than the incarnation of Krishna, who sings on the flute with tender leaflet like lips and who has peacock-feather on His head- crown?]

20) Tapasvinaamapyanuraktamantah, kallolayantam muraleekalaih kah,

Tamaakalayyaakalaneeyamekam, pashyet param mandamahaashayopi?

[He is creating Tsunami in the minds of sages born as Gopikas by His sweet flute songs. He is the only object to be seen by eyes of any soul. After seeing such person, who can see other inert or non-inert item, even though the seer is the great leader of fools?]

21) Abhinnaraagaanyapi venugaanaih, bhinnani brundaavana vallaveebhih,

Mahaamsi hamsaih paramairvimuktaih, neelaani neelaani vilokitaani.

[Blue-blue lights (Krishna appearing as several Krishnas) were seen by sages, who obtained ultimate salvation, in Brundavanam. Such blue lights (multiplied forms of Krishna) were different being divided by Gopikas (each Krishna is with each Gopika), but, not different by the raaga (tune of flute/love of Krishna) of flute of Krishna (Raaga means both love and tune of song. This means that even though Krishna is multiplied by Gopikas, the raaga meaning love of Krishna as well as tune of song on flute is not divided and remained same.).]

22) Vandanam Vaasudevaaya, ramamaanaaya Raadhayaa,

Brundavanamarandaanaam, marandaaya mahaatmane.

[Salutations to Lord Vaasudeva, who is engaged by Radha and who is the nectar of nectars of the flowers of Brundaavanam-forest.]

23) Shyaamabaala! Kathayaamyapi tarkaih, tvat chamatkrutishu kevalamekaam,

Gopikaasu vidadhaasi cha moham, Paandave harasi tam cha vimuktyai!

[Oh pale black boy! Shall I tell just one of Your tactful plays? You are creating fascination in Gopikas and You are removing fascination from Arjuna for his salvation! (Fascination in Gopikas is towards God and fascination in Arjuna is towards world. The common word fascination is taken and contradiction is created by the poet.)]

24) Sa Vaamadevo nanu Vaasudevah, Sa Vaasudevo nanu Vaamadevah,

Sa kaamahantaa sa cha raasakelih, sa eva dharmah tadatikramashcha.

[That Vaamadeva (Shiva) is this Vaasudeva (Krishna). This Vaasudeva is that Vaamadeva. One form burns cupid (deity of sex) and another form dances with Gopikas! One form is justice and another form is violation of justice! (God is not having any lust except testing Gopikas in their worldly bonds.)]

25) Viraaginastapasyanti, Shivalingaabhishechakaah,

Gopeechuuchukalolasya, prasaadaaya kimadbhutam!

[What more is climax of wonder than this! Sages are doing penance for the grace of Lord Krishna by bathing Shiva linga (a wave form of stone representing God Shiva), while Lord Krishna is fond of the nipple of the breast of Gopika!! (Shiva Linga exactly resembles the nipple of the breast. God tests the devotees for their firmness of faith in Him and also repels undeserving devotees by such illusory plays.)]

26) Vyabhichaari cha sheelena, Vedebhyastapasopi cha,

Tamahprakaashayoraikyam, tattvam chitramupaasmahe.

[We mediate this wonderful character, which violates ethics, scripture and also penance and is a merged mixture of darkness and light to have pale black colour. (God appears violating justice, but, on deep analysis we can find that He is supporting justice only.)]

27) Niyamadharmatapodhvaradaanato, na kalitam kalitaamasahaarinam,

Kimapi kartumakartumathaanyathaa, samuditam muditam bhaja vallavam.

[Worship that cowherd, who is not seen by rules, justice, penance and sacrifice, who is the remover of ignorance in this kali age, who is born to show that He can do anything, doesn’t do anything and can do anything in anyway and who is always blissful.]

28) Aalokayaamahe drustvaa, yam samsaarah palaayate,

Kaalam kaala Jaraasandha—ranabhuumipalaayanam!

[On seeing whom even this entire worldly illusion runs away, He is running away from the battle field with demons like Kaalayavana and Jaraasandha! We are looking this wonderful scene!]

29) Sa chiraadavalokachaatakaanaam, plavanashraantimataam mamotsavaaya,

Bhavapalvalanirvilokanaanaam, pratipannah kamaneeyaKrishnameghah.

[After a long time, that blue cloud, Krishna, appeared before My looks for happiness, which are tired in flying, still somehow flying away like chaatakaa birds without looking at the worldly fascination-mud pond on the earth. (The chaatakaa birds drink only the rain drops directly falling from the cloud and never drink water present on the earth.)]
