Speeches of Shri Datta Swami In First World Parliament On Spirituality Part-7

53) Donation of Food:-

Donation of food to a hungry person is the justice of emergency (Aapat Dharma) and analysis of deservingness of receiver shall not be done here. Even the life of an atheist must be saved from hunger death, which is the only shame on this entire humanity. If you save the life of an atheist also, there may be a future opportunity to convert him in to theist. Instead of burning oil lamps, candles, sticks etc., the money spent in such acts can be saved to protect the life-lamp of a hungry person to preach him spiritual knowledge in the future. God is the light of lights (tasya bhaasaa... Veda) and doesn’t require any light. The entire essence of the sacrifice is cooking food and donating it to hungry living beings. Even the great sages participating in the discussions of the spiritual knowledge become hungry after some time and need food to become energetic to continue the discussions further.

54) Hidden Intensions:-

Hidden intensions can be easily found out by careful analysis. A theist behaves like an atheist asking for the proof of miracles and his intension is to find out the possessor of miracles so that, later on, he can act as converted theist, become devotee and exploit the miracles to solve his personal problems in the final stage. The bridegroom says that he is against the dowry and only requires an educated wife. The hidden intension in this is that the educated wife will certainly be employed and earn money. Rejection of dowry is due to realisation of the earning by job being far greater than the dowry! Intensions can’t be hidden from the omniscient God and hence, homogeneity in mind, word and action (Trikarana Shuddhi) is necessary in spiritual field.

55) Entertainment of God:-

Entertainment of God is often misunderstood by the critics, who say that the omniscient and omnipotent God doesn’t require any entertainment in the worldly sense. You shall not criticize even such entertainment of a person provided it is not sadism and provided justice is maintained in it. A rich person started a college in order to engage himself and pass on the time fruitfully. He maintained perfect justice in the institution by employing top class teachers, by conducting examinations with perfect justice etc. A student, who neglected the education, involved in vices failed in the examinations and committed suicide. The parents of this student file a criminal case against the owner of college charging him to be responsible for the murder! Is such charge justified? All other students in the class passed in the examinations. Similarly, God established this world maintaining its law and order perfectly, always destroying injustice and protecting justice. He comes down continuously to preach the right path. A fellow, feeling difficulties in the life due to his indiscipline, criticizes God by saying “Your creation done for Your entertainment is responsible for all my present problems. Entertainment for cat and agony for rat!” The entertainment of God is also not so cheap like passing on time by playing chess etc. The divine entertainment is in very high level, which is the enjoyment of devotion of climax devotees and such bliss is unimaginable!

55) Very High Theoretical Goals:-

Very high theoretical goals must be setup and efforts must be put to achieve such high goals. In such case only, you will achieve, at least, normal goals in practice. If you put effort to get a gold medal in the class, you can be sure, at least, about your pass! The climax devotees like Hanuman, Radha etc., are generally the human incarnations of God only, who acted in such roles to be a practical example for the devotees. Their achievements can be kept, at least, as theoretical goals so that normal practical goals can, at least, be achieved. You shouldn’t reject their achievements saying that an ordinary human being can’t achieve such heights. You should keep their achievements as your goals and try to reach those so that, at least, you can achieve, certainly, better goals than normal goals. Who knows? You may achieve even that goal! People involved in this world discourage you in following such high goals. Basically, jealousy, also acts as promoter of discouragement of you, a real devotee, trying sincerely for the high goal. Jealousy is towards you, the specific devotee trying for high goals since you may surpass them by reaching high goal and they try to pull your leg down in the beginning itself! This hidden truth is not noticed by you.

56) Digested Knowledge:-

Digested knowledge alone turns into practice like the digested food only turns into blood. One may eat lot, but, very little of it is digested. Possessed knowledge is like the eaten food. One may eat very little and digest it entirely. Similarly, the possessed wealth by you is not important, but, the sacrificed wealth will bring spiritual value for you in the eyes of God. More the possessed wealth, less will be its sacrifice like more eaten food brings problems in digestion. The practical real fruit comes only for the practical devotion and not for theoretical devotion. Theoretical devotion may give you only theoretical fruits.

57) Monism of Shankara:-

Monism of Shankara is very much misunderstood by its followers. The main points of it are: i) God alone is true (Brahma satyam), which means that unimaginable God alone is the ultimate truth and second to it is not true because any imaginable item (second to it) can’t enter the unimaginable domain since it can’t exist in the ultimate truth. Unimaginable domain (Paramaartha dashaa) is separate from imaginable domain (Vyavahaara dashaa). But, unimaginable domain or the ultimate God can enter the imaginable domain due to His omnipotence of unimaginable nature. Incarnation is descended God from unimaginable domain to imaginable domain and not the ascended human soul from imaginable domain to unimaginable domain. The first link between unimaginable God and imaginable space is unimaginable, which can be crossed by the unimaginable God only and not by the imaginable soul. ii) The creation is neither existent nor non-existent (Jagat mithyaa). This means that the world is non-existent for unimaginable God, but, is existent for the soul, which is a part of the created world and not a part of the creator-God. If world is equally true with God, God can’t create world, which is equal truth like Him! Hence, the existence or non-existence of the world is decided with respect to the reference only and a single decision is not possible. Hence, world is called as Mithyaa, which is different from existence and non-existence. iii) In the case of human incarnation only, the soul (individual soul or jiiva) is God (Jiivo Brahmaiva). This should not be extended to every soul because God is unimaginable having several properties out of which one property is awareness or knowing and hence, God can’t be concluded as awareness only and be decided as the soul. Such awareness of God is unimaginable being present without inert energy and nervous system before creation of energy and matter.

58) Background of the Bhaagavatam:-

The strongest worldly bonds, called as eshanas are bond with money, bond with issues and bond with life-partner. The sages did continuous penance which is gaining the details of knowledge of God that generates devotion to God. The digestion of right knowledge and the truth of devotion can be tested only through practical devotion, which decides whether the knowledge was in right direction or not and whether the devotion is true or false. God competes with the above three bonds and His victory decides the result of passing the test. The sages concluded that the contemporary human incarnation is the final relevant form of God and surrendered to Rama, who was their contemporary human incarnation. The sages requested Rama to accept to embrace Him in the form of females, surpassing the male ego and bond with life-partner. God wanted to test the other two bonds also and also to test the bond with life-partner while they are females to take lot of risk. God was born as Krishna and sages were born as Gopikas for this final test. Krishna stole the butter reserved for their children and butter was the entire wealth of Gopikas. Some liked the stealing of butter by Krishna and also gave Him butter secretly. These Gopikas successful in the test of these two bonds (wealth and issues) also went to Brundavanam to dance with Krishna. These Gopikas on passing these three tests were granted the abode above the God called as Goloka. The failed Gopikas (sages) in these three tests complained to Yashoda (mother of Krishna) regarding the stealing of their butter and also did not go to Brundavanam for dance with Krishna in the nights since they were failures. After this, Krishna left Brundavanam and never returned to do this again. He did not repeat this in His entire life anywhere since Gopikas (sages) were confined to Brundavanam only and their tests were finished. This shows that Krishna didn’t have any fascination to stealing and dancing with ladies, which were only the tests of the three eshanas. If you still persist to imitate Krishna, it is agreed provided you lift even a big stone of hill and not the hill. Whenever an idea about imitating Krishna comes to your brain, immediately, imagine the scene of Krishna lifting the hill up on His tender finger! Other religions need not criticize Krishna without understanding this background. Remember that Krishna gave the Gita, which is the essence of entire spiritual knowledge for the sake of entire humanity!

59) Gratefulness to God:-

If our files are opened in the divine enquiry done after our death, the human rebirth is impossible. Still, God sanctioned us the human rebirth based on a trace of hope of our reformation. For this, we must be grateful to Him. After giving us the human rebirth, He has given us all facilities of life and He fulfilled most of our genuine desires placed before Him. We shall be grateful to Him for all these things. We must express gratefulness to Him, several times in everyday. We are not doing this forgetting what is already done to us by Him. Before placing our fresh desire, first, we shall remember all the favours already done by Him to us and express gratefulness. Are we doing this? – not at all. We place our fresh desire straight before Him and if there is delay, we neglect or even scold Him! A donor is giving 100 rupees to a beggar every day. One day, there was delay in his donation. The beggar forgot all the previous donations and started scolding the donor! A fresh donor, who refused the first donation, was respected much by the beggar, who said “the fresh donor is a great person of policy whereas the old donor is bloody in breaking his policy”! Whenever a miracle was done by the Father of heaven, Jesus used to thank Him without failing, always passed the credit of miracle to Him only and never owned it. You shall never own any merit since every merit or unimaginable action is always from God only.

60) Don’t Aspire Fruit for Divine Service:-

God selects you for His service based on your service done to Him in previous births. The divine service granted to you by God is the fruit of your previous service. A fruit of service can’t have another fruit. When you are paid salary for your service on the last working day of the month, you can’t ask another salary for the work done in drawing the monthly salary! Based on this logic only, you are reminded again and again not to aspire any fruit for the divine service. You are misunderstanding this and think that you shall not aspire fruit for the divine service done by you! You are thinking that the service done by you to God has some fruit, which shall not be aspired by you! Based on this analysis, the divine service done by any soul has no fruit at all. God can get this work (done by you) through any other soul just by wishing so. Even you will do this work if God simply wishes. But, He wants His work to be done by any soul through full willingness only and not through the miraculous power of His will. The reason is that any soul can be uplifted provided it does the divine service with full willingness only. Even all this is not necessary in the angle of simply getting the work done irrespective of the uplift of the soul, the work is done by itself without the need of any worker (soul) since the will of God itself is omnipotent. Getting the work done is not at all in the aim of God and the aim of God is only to uplift the soul through its practical service. In view of all this, you must always thank God with full gratefulness for graciously granting the service to you.

61) Sacrifice of Attachment to Fruit:-

In the Gita, God Krishna said that the fruit of your work shall be sacrificed to God (karmaphala tyaaga) and this point is very clear in several verses like “Karmajam... phalam tyaktvaa”, the true translation of which is that an intellectual will sacrifice the fruit of his work and will reach God. This is misinterpreted as that one shall sacrifice the attachment to fruit, but, not the fruit. The mental attachment to fruit shall be sacrificed before implementing the sacrifice of fruit, which is to be done without any force and to be done with full true love to God to be proved practically. Thus, the mental detachment from the fruit, which is to be attained from the digested spiritual knowledge (and not from the possessed spiritual knowledge), is a pre-requisite for the practical sacrifice of fruit to God.

Apart from the above aspect of mental detachment of fruit, another aspect of the same mental detachment of fruit must be also understood. Even if you don’t like the sacrifice of fruit to God since you are attracted to it for your enjoyment, then also, you must detach your mind from the fruit in order to achieve the fruit successfully. If you are detached from fruit in your mind, you will not have any tension by the raise of your internal energy (DE). If DE is zero, all the energy supplied to you from food (Q) is converted into your work (W) so that the success for fruit is certain as per the law of Thermodynamics (Q= DE+W). This is the best advice to a student also attending the examinations. If the student maintains zero tension, all the energy available for work possessed by the student is converted into work so that the brain works fully and remembers the answers already studied resulting in pass in the examination. The Gita also says the same that one should concentrate on work only without aspiration for its fruit (karmanyevaadhikaaraste maa phaleshu). Hence, mental detachment from the fruit helps in attaining the fruit for self-enjoyment as well as for sacrificing the fruit to God.
