How boredom of God was compared to death when there is no deficiency of anything in the case of God?

Updated on 29 Oct 2025

[Shri Ramakanth asked:- Swami, please explain how boredom of God was compared to death when You say that there is no deficiency of anything in the case of God?]

Swami replied:- i) The unimaginable God has everything with Him since anything is materialized by His will that is created by His omnipotency. In His case, we say that He was not bored in real sense and the boredom in His case is just for the sake of change in the variety of entertainment. The example here is a king completely happy in his palace wants to go to forest for hunting just for the sake of change of place and variety of entertainment. In this case, the Veda says “Ekākī na ramate, sa dvitīyamaicchat” and the Brahmasutra also says “Lokavattu līlā kaivalyam”.

ii) When the unimaginable God incarnates in energetic form or human form, God is completely immersed in the role like an ordinary human being to have entertainment by covering Himself with ignorance. In such immersion, God undergoes pain and happiness like an ignorant human being. When Satii died, God Shiva became mad weeping continuously. Similarly, when Ravana stole Sita, Rama also wept in a similar way. In this context, the boredom felt by the incarnated God in absence of His life partner is felt like death. Although such pain (avidyā) touches the soul of the incarnation (human being-component), such pain does not touch the God-component of the incarnation due to its internal self-awareness (vidyā) and hence, the incarnation maintains its inherent immortal bliss inside. In such context like the death of life partner, the Veda says that the boredom is like death (Avidyayā mṛtyuṃ tīrtvā, vidyayā'mṛtamaśnute, Vidyā cā 'vidyā ca). Even an intellectual soul feels such deathlike boredom in several tragic situations and gets peace with extreme happiness by analysis using spiritual knowledge. In this way, incarnated God and an ordinary human being stand in par with each other.

Like this, both situations are different from each other.

Q. Do the deathlike boredom felt by God before creation was created?

[Shri Ramakanth asked:- Actually, I understood that death like boredom was faced by God in His absolute state where no second item existed and He alone existed. But the example given by Swami above is when He incarnated already and losing His life partner is causing the pain, which is like death. How do we understand this death like boredom in absolute state? In absolute state, He being all by Himself should be like an ocean of continuous bliss. In relative form also (incarnation), Swami is telling that original infinite bliss form is not affected. By this, the absolute state should never have any boredom in the first place, right? It may be just a variety of entertainment like a king going for hunting but that need not be deathlike boredom like in the case of an incarnation losing His life partner. Isn't it?]

Swami replied:- The deathlike boredom is not mentioned in the context of absolutely real God. The deathlike boredom is mentioned only in the context of incarnation of God or a realised soul.  Both the contexts are quite different and cannot be connected to each other. In the context of incarnation only, it is said that God can cross the deathlike boredom by imposing ignorance on Him. There itself, it is again told that by self-awareness, the incarnation will get its original bliss. Some commentaries tell that this hymn applies to a realised soul also. We have no objection because the incarnation behaving like a realised soul is acceptable. In the case of realised soul, instead of self-awareness, the analysis of the separation of truth and false (Sadasad viveka) relieves the soul from the tragic pain leading it to the immense happiness. The incarnation has ocean of bliss inside, whereas a realised soul has the talent of finding the truth discriminating it from false since he/she recalls that the absolute God is the absolute truth, whereas the creation is inherently unreal existing at present with God gifted reality.
