(Poem of Lord Shri Krishna)
Chaturtha Dalam – Fourth Leaf

1) Jrumbhataam hrudaya jrumbhataam raso,

Jrumbhataamanishamarnavormibhih,

Jaarachoracharitaankachandramaah,

Sarvasadgunakalassa drushyate.

[O heart-ocean! Let your rasa (water or interest) grow vigorously. Let it grow more vigorously. Let it grow most vigorously. Lord Krishna is seen with full good quality-lights and also with black spots like stealing and dancing with Gopikas (the ocean grows in the full moon-night).]

2) Paanasravat kshirajharaassariire,

Baalasya vishnoshcharanaprayaanaah,

Mandaakiniijanmapadonmukhaah kim,

Kaadambiniinirgama hamsamaalaah!

[God Vishnu as boy Krishna was drinking milk and the streams of the milk are falling on His blue body and going down towards His feet from which Ganga river was born. These white streams look like lines of white swans flying in the blue sky in rainy season towards Ganga river in Himalayas!]

3) Nakshatrajaalaa gaganasthaliiva,

Phenaprathaanaa yamunaanadiiva,

Vibhaati muktaabharanaa tanuste,

Diipaavaliiranjitasharvariiva.

[Your blue body decorated by white pearl chains is shining like the blue sky with crowds of stars, like blue Yamuna river with white foam groups and like the dark night of deepaavali festival with rows of white lights.]

4) Niilaniilamahasaam mahodayah,

Kopi kopi kamaniiyavibhramah,

Venunaadhamadhuro vilakshano,

Manmanastaralayatyaho! ghanah.

[Some special-special exhibition of beautiful stylish cloud, radiating blue-blue lights emanating sweet voice of flute (instead of harsh voice of cloud) is vibrating My mind.]

5) Kaalaalakaalankruta mugdhamaasyam,

Tavojjvaladdiidhitimandahaasam,

Nilotpalam sabhramaram himaamshu-

Sphurattushaaraambukanam smaraami.

[The blue face of Krishna with vibrating black lock of hair on it and with bright radiating white smile looks like a blue lotus flower with vibrating black bee on it and with a white snowdrop fallen on it.]

6) “Naanaadhaamahrutam payah pibasi kim kshiiraarnavam kukshigam,

Krucchrenaapi bibharshi baala! Phalitam kim karma taavattava?”

“Nuunam praagayamarnavo hi payasaam syaanmaam vahamstarkyataam”

Ityuktirvrajavruddha Krishnachalitaa saa vo dhiyashchodayet.

[A old cowherd speaks - “O boy! what is Your fate resulting like this! You are drinking all the milk stolen from various houses and Your stomach is storing it. You are bearing an ocean of milk!” Boy Krishna replies- “If you analyze the fate of deed and fruit, don’t you think that this ocean of milk was bearing Me previously?” Let this conversation sharpen your intellects (Lord Vishnu lies on the ocean of milk).]

7) Tadapatyam yashodaayaah,

Gopiipatyantaram mama,

Agatyantaradiinasya,

Saangatyam kimupekshate?

[Will the issue of mother Yashoda (Krishna), becoming alternative husband for Gopikas, overlook the association of Me, who is pitiable in not having any other alternative way?]

8) Yah puutanaastanaghataat vishamaachakarsha,

Tajjivitam tadanu mauktikasutramadhyah,

Haalaahalam tadamrutam cha payassamudraat,

Aavrutta sheshashikhariiva sa vo jayaaya.

[Krishna, wearing white pearl chain around His waist, takes out first, the poison from the pot like milk-breast of the demon Putanaa and next, He took out her life. He is like the churning hill Mandara surrounded by white shesha serpent taking out, first, the poison and next, the divine nectar from the milk-ocean. Let such Krishna give you victory!]

9) Godhuulistimitaavaloka yamunaatiiraadhvanaavartiniih,

KakshyaavartitavaaripuuritaghatairGopaalakanyaah sprushan,

Vakshojeshu katham ghatatrayabharah khedaaya naayam mayaa,

Sahaayyam taditi bruvan smitamukheedhuuto Harih paatu vah.

[It was evening on the banks of Yamuna river, which is full of cow dust and vision was not clear. Gopikas are coming from the river bearing water pots by their sides of their two breasts with the help of rounded hand. Krishna is approaching, touching breast of each Gopika and saying that He will help her since carrying three pots is very strenuous (two breasts and one water pot are assumed as three pots). Gopikas were pushing Him away with smiling faces. Let such Lord protect all of you.]

10) Ham! Kaalayavanam karshat,

Neelam dhaavati kim nu tat?

Tejo bhramarasandoham,

Vaayudhuutamivotpalam!

[Be silent! What is that blue light (Krishna) running by dragging the black demon called Kaalayavana in the back? It looks like a blue lotus flower running by the pushing air and dragging a group of black bees behind it!]

11) He Rama! Suuryakula! Shaarjnadhanurdhara! tvam,

Yogiindrachittakamalodaya! durniriikshyah,

Nityam tu Krishna! Shashivamshaja! Chakrapaane!,

Gopiivilokakumudapramudaavalokyah.

[O Lord Rama! You are born in the dynasty of sun having the bow called as Shaarjna in Your hand. Due to You, the lotus like minds of sages are opened (lotus flowers open on sunrise). It is very difficult to see You. O Lord Krishna! You are born in the dynasty of moon having the wheel, called as Sudarshana in Your hand. Due to You, the blue lotus flower like looks of Gopikas are opened with pleasure (blue lotus flowers open on moonrise). It is very pleasant to see You always (both bow and wheel are the weapons of God Vishnu).]

12) Mayi te kamalaapate! kshanam,

Kamalaakshidviguniikrutashriyah,

Avalokaparamparaakulaat,

Avalokopi sa kopi yojyataam.

[Lakshmi or wealth, the wife of God Vishnu, sits on lotus flower. In Your face, two lotus flowers as eyes exist indicating that Your wealth is doubled. O Lord Krishna! The husband of Lakshmi! From the groups of series of Your looks, any one look may be kindly thrown on Me.]

13) Kuto maamapahaaya tvam,

Gatosi madhusuudana!,

Eteshu divaseshvasmi,

Khalo bhuyaanuluukhalah.

[O Lord Madhusudana! Where have You gone all these days leaving Me? In these days, I became very bad person like the mortar with which You are tied (Mother Yashoda tied boy Krishna to the stony mortar with a rope to control His mischief. The mortar is assumed as bad since it bound the Lord.).]

14) Paratattvaamrutaasaara-

Varshiniimatiharshiniim,

VenugopalaKrishnaakhya-

Muurtimaartiharaam stumah.

[We praise the figure of Venu Gopaala Krishna that takes away our pains, which is raining the divine nectar of the divine nature of God with full bliss.]

15) Alankrutaa vadhuurjahre,

Vaidarbhii yena saiva me,

Kavitaa tam haratvadya,

Karmano niyamohyayam.

[Krishna has stolen the decorated Vaidarbhi (Rukmini, the daughter of King of Vidarbha). As a tit for tat, now, let My decorated (by figures of speech) poetry in the style of Vaidarbhi (Vaidarbhi is a specific style of poetry) steal Krishna. This is the rule of deeds, which is to do a similar counter deed for a deed. (Alankrutaa means both decorated girl as well as poetry decorated by figures of speech. Vaidarbhi means both the daughter of King of Vidarbha as well as the poetry with a specific style called as Vaidarbhi.)]

16) Gopaala! taarayasi kim bhavavaariraashim?

Madhye khalam drudhanibaddhamuluukhalam maam,

Unmaada esha sahajah kila yaadavaanaam,

Nimbapramaana iti lokavachotra satyam!

[O Gopaala! Are You going to cross this worldly ocean by dragging Me like the tight bound bad stony mortar? This is Your madness since My weight (ignorance) is unlimited. In the world, there is a saying that Yaadavas (Krishna is born in Yaadavas) have little madness of the size of a Neem fruit and this saying is true on seeing Your effort!]

17) Vilambodya kutah Krishna!,

Vinaahvaanam prapadyase,

Sahasra vallaviibaahu-

Bandhaneshu kva vaa hrutah?

[O Krishna! Why are You delaying today? Every day, You are coming to Me without any invitation. Where are You lost in the tight embracements of the hands of many Gopikas?]

18) Kva shankhachakradhvajalaanchanam te,

Padaaravindam Purushottamasya?

Kva paanirasmaakamabhaagyarekhah,

Samvaahanaashaa kamalaasmitaaya?

[Where is the sacred foot of the Lord of heroes, which is marked with the signs of conch shell, wheel and flag (these marks are said to be auspicious)? Where is our hand with the mark of misfortune? Our ambition to press the feet of the Lord is causing smile in the face of Goddess Lakshmi (Lakshmi alone has that rare fortune to press the feet of Lord).]

19) Ashaashvatam jiivitamatra drushyate,

Na cha sthiram tvayapi vidyate manah,

Bhavatpadaashaa mahatii mametyato,

Nirantaram Krishna! tava smitam mukhe.

[My life is seen as temporary span of time. My mind is also not fixed on You. But, My ambition to press Your feet is very much. Hence, O Lord Krishna! You are having a permanent smile on Your face regarding this issue!]

20) Dinam dinam yaatamanabhyupeyam,

Kaalapravaahakshata budbudam tat,

Aagaamyanirdeshyamanuuhyamrutyoh,

Idam mama tvam cha vichintaniiyah.

[Every day is going as yesterday, which can’t return. It is a broken water bubble in the flow of time stream. Tomorrow is uncertain since death can happen at any time. Only today, this minute, is Mine. Hence, now itself, I will think about You.]

21) Anuuhyapaapajvalanaaya bhaavyataam,

Sa eva paarthaabhayapaanimudrayaa,

Viraajate yo navameghatejasaa,

Bhramatsahasraamshukiriitaprushthavaan.

[Only Lord Krishna having a radiating wheel of energy rotating in the back of His crown on head and standing with the palm indicating abhaya (no fear), who is shining like a new cloud with shining sun in its back, alone is capable of burning even unimaginable sins into ash. (The sun shining burns the sins while the cloud protects the body of the sinner.)]

22) Pramaaniikriyate paape,

Yaa shrutih smaranaat tava,

Matpaapadahane saiva,

Pramaaniikriyate mayaa.

[The scripture is saying that a specific deed is sin. The same scripture says that sin is destroyed by remembering and surrendering to You (apahatapaapmaa - Veda, sarvapaapebhyo mokshayishyaami - Gita). The authority is same in both cases and if one accepts first point, the second point must be also accepted. (By total surrender to God, a soul will not do any sin and hence, all the pending sins were burnt. If sins are not repeated, that is only the sign of total surrender because in total absorption in God, there is no need of doing any sin.)]

23) Ayamvenudhvanissaayam,

Suute raagam vilakshanam,

Payodharaparicchannam,

Hrudaye vrajayoshitaam.

[In the evening, Krishna is singing on flute for the cows to return. This song is generating raaga (red colour of setting sun), which is seen above the payodhara (clouds). This song is also generating special raaga (love) in the hearts of Gopikas that is hidden by their payodhara (breasts). This raaga is special because it is hidden by payodhara unlike in the case of cloud. (Payodhara means both cloud and breast. Raaga means both red colour and love.)]

24) Muktaavaliibhirvalitam nu Krishnam,

Krishnoragairvaa dhavalam shariiram,

Varnadvayavyatyaya ityamaani,

Swapne tvayi praaptashive narena.

[Arjuna got a dream during the war time in which he saw Krishna here and later on Shiva in the upper world. Krishna was black decorated by white pearl garlands. Shiva was white decorated by black serpents. He understood that both Krishna and Shiva are one only with alternatively exchanged white and black colours.]

25) Vatso vatsaasuradhvamsii,

Krishnah Krishnatamoharah,

Iti shailoddhare gopaah,

Svajanatraanashankinah!

[When Krishna lifted up the mountain, the cowherds doubt His protection to His own people because as Vatsa (boy), He killed a demon called as Vatsa and as Krishna (black), He destroys the black ignorance. These two examples prove that He is against to His own items! (Actually, cowherds doubted Krishna as a boy to have the capacity to maintain the hill on His finger. This doubt was interpreted in another way by the poet.)]

26) Kshiraambhodhiplavanalahariigokulollanghanaaya,

Gopivalliibhramararavavannuupuronnartanaaya,

Govindena svayamupachitam punyavadbhirbhavadbhih,

Venorgaanam madhuramadhuram shruuyataam shruuyataam tat.

[O sacred souls! Listen, listen that sweet-sweet song sung on the flute by Lord Govinda, which is composed by Himself. This song is creating jumps in the white cows and white waves in Milk Ocean. It is also causing dance with anklets sounding like bees in the case of Gopikas, who are lean like creepers.]

27) Madyam yaadavayoshitaam tanulataavidyutpravaahapradam,

Sadyaschedyatamoharam yadamrutam vidyaavataam yoginaam,

Udyaane tava khandakhaadyatatiniiprodyanmadhudyotakam,

Padyam hrudyatamam kimadya muraliivaadyena naanadyate?

[Today, which song is sung on Your flute in Brundavanam? It is wine for Gopikas and creates flow of electricity in their bodies. The same song destroys the ignorance of learned sages and becomes divine nectar for them. It is so sweet that it appears as a river of molten sugar!]

28) Vaamaanaam nayanairaham vinihato miinaissphuradvibhramaih,

Magno guudhavisarpinakravishaye samsaaraghoraarnave,

Tvadvayamshiiyakrutaaparaadhakalanaamaryaadayaa Krishna! Maam,

Asmaaduddhara taavakiiyamadhunaa miinaavataara! Prabho!

[O Lord present in the incarnation as fish! I am beaten by the dazzling styles of fish-like eyes of beautiful ladies and got immersed in this frightening world-ocean in which the worldly issues are moving secretly like the crocodiles. All this tragedy happened due to the fish (eyes of ladies) born in Your race only. You are the eldest leader of this race. I am also Your devotee. Hence, You have the responsibility to lift Me up from this ocean. (If a mistake is done by some people belonging to a race, it is the responsibility of the eldest leader to rectify it.)]

29) Paanasraavapayodhaaraa,

Charanaat parivartinii,

Mandaakiniiva te bhaati,

Vishnustvamiti vaadinii.

[O Krishna! While You are drinking the white milk, it is flowing on the ground falling from Your mouth over chest, legs and feet and is looking like white Ganga river flowing out from Your feet saying that You are God Vishnu. (The white Ganga river is born from the foot of God Vishnu.)]

30) Payo harasi vruddhyartham,

Priyosi haladhaarinah,

Krishnamegha! tvayi vyakte,

Hamsaanaamuttaraa gatih.

[You are stealing payah (milk). The cloud also is stealing payah (water). (Since water evaporates becoming cloud, it can be treated as cloud stealing the water in unseen evaporation way. Payah means both milk and water). Both Yourself and cloud are black. You are dear to Haladhaaree (Balaraama, the brother of Krishna, who wears plough as weapon). The cloud is also dear to Haladhaaree (farmer wearing plough in the field). When You are seen, the hamsa (sages) go to north (north is the divine path to heaven). When the cloud is seen, the hamsa (swans) go to north (Himalayas). (Swans fly to north side when the cloud is seen in the rainy season. Hamsa means both sage and swan.)]

31) Sallaapaissarasiiva lokavishyaih kallolitaa vaaranaih,

Bhillairme hariniiva rauti dhishanaa chaavellitaa shadgunaih,

Chaanuurapratimalla! taam tyaja bhavallolaam kshanam matkrute,

Valliim pallavavallaviikulavatiim gopallikaam mallikaam.

[My mind is very much disturbed by the worldly issues connected to six vices like a lake disturbed by elephants and a deer disturbed by hunters. O counter boxer to the famous boxer called Chaanuura! Please leave for a moment, for My sake, that village of cowherds, which is tying You like a jasmine creeper having Gopikas as its tender leaflets.]

32) Shriipaado gangayaa yastava nijarajasaa shaktidhautaamshurajjvaa,

Paataalaadaarsharoshakshapitasagarajasvargamaargaikadiipah,

Kasmaat daakshinyalesham mayi na sa bhajate punyavatpattikaayaam,

Paataalasthe dayaalo! nirayapatirushaa Krishna! dagdhe vidagdhe.

[O kind Lord Krishna! I am burnt by the anger of the Lord of hell due to My trickish talents in My sins. This is the reason for Your shining foot in not showing even a trace of kindness on Me. The stream of white dust of such foot is like the white Ganga river like rope in dragging up and like the lamp showing the path to heaven to the sons of King Sagara, who were cursed by Sage Kapila in the bottom-most world called paataala. I am also cursed by My sins and exist in the lowermost plane. They are lucky, but, I am unfortunate. (The reason is that they did not show any trickish talent in doling sins.)]

33) Pativrataanaamapi pashya pashya,

Vidhuutanaadhoddhatadhaavanaani,

Rasaadanaavarjitavastu Vishnoh,

Venudhvaneradhvani kimkimasti?

[Look, look there. Even the chaste Gopikas are throwing away their husbands and are running towards Brundavanam on hearing the flute song. Which, which item exists in this world that is not attracted in the path of the sweet flute song of God Vishnu (Krishna)?]

34) Tam hamsamaalaanavaniilamegham,

Muktaavaliimekhalayaabhiraamam,

Praanaarpanenaapi vrunomi Krishnam,

Sapaatakopyasmi sa chaatakoham.

[I will opt for beautiful Krishna only even at the cost of My life, who is wearing the white pearl chain on His waist and is looking like a blue cloud having a row of swans around it. I may be a sinner, but, I am that Chaataka bird waiting for the grace of Krishna only (the Chaataka bird drinks straight water falling from cloud only).]

35) Itahparam na me bhiitih,

Parvataadapi paatanaat,

Asti paanidvayam vishnoh,

Mamaalambaaya paavanam.

[From now onwards, I have no fear even if I am thrown down from the top of the hill. Both the pious hands of God Vishnu are there to catch me. (When Prahlada was thrown down from the top of the hill, he was caught by the pious hands of God Vishnu.)]

36) He tarkashaastra! bhavate kriyate pranaamah,

Sarvasya heturiti gaamupasamhara tvam,

Vishnorakaaranadayaa yadi chodhrutassyaam,

Hetuprayuktadayayaahamayogya eva.

[O scripture of logic! I am offering salutation to you. Please withdraw your argument that everything must have reason. If God shows kindness without reason on Me, I am lifted up. If God’s kindness is always associated with reason, I am not saved because I am undeserving.]

37) Naahetukam kimapyastii-

tyuchyataam naachyuta! tvayaa,

Ahetustvam hi drushtaantaat,

Mayyahetudayaam kuru.

[O Lord Achyuta! Don’t say that nothing exists without cause and hence, that You can’t show reasonless kindness on Me. The best example without cause is Yourself! Hence, kindly show on Me the causeless kindness.]

38) Yasyottamaangavitato yamunaapravaahe,

Chatraayitah phanipatistaratassapitraa,

Tambodhayatyahaha! Kaaliyavaaripuuraat,

Duuramchareti jananii pratibhaatamambaa!

[When the boy Krishna is crossing the river Yamuna with the help of His father carrying Him on his head, the Lord of serpents spread his heads on the boy like an umbrella. Such boy is warned every day in the morning by His mother before going out with cows that He should move far from the lake having Kaaliya serpent!]

39) Praayena venuphuutkaara!,

Chauryaadyairvakravartana!,

Krishnasarpa! tvayaa dashtaa,

Chumbane kaa na mohitaa?

[You are often blowing air through mouth in order to sing on the flute. The serpent also often blows air through mouth. You are always curved by stealing, etc. The serpent is also curved always. You are black and the cobra is also black. When You kiss biting with Your teeth, which lady does not become unconscious? Even when the cobra bites (kisses), which living being does not become unconscious (due to the effect of poison)?]

40) Hiranyakalahe dharmam,

Paatum tvaam jaatamaashraye,

Bhimaat paschaat naraat puurvam,

Uurdhvasimhamadhonaram.

[In the quarrel with Hiranya (wealth), You appeared to protect justice, taking birth after the birth of Bhima (wild like lion) and before the birth of soft Nara (Arjuna). You are also born as Narasimha having face of lion up and nara (human body) below in the quarrel of Hiranya (Hiranyakashipu-demon).]

41) Sukheshu na tvam kshanamapyavekshyase,

Smrutosi duhkheshu phalaantavismrutah,

Tathaapi mayyeva krutaghnashekhare,

Mukunda! Kasmaadiyatii dayaa tava?

[O Lord Mukunda! In all My happy times, I am not seeing You even for one minute. When difficulties come, I remember You immediately. When You solve the difficulties and give happiness, I forget You again immediately. I am the topper of the list of ungrateful souls. Still, why are You showing so much kindness on Me?]

42) Tava smaranalolasya,

Praanaanadyopasamhara,

Athavaa mrutiparyantam,

Dehi me smaranam tava.

[At present, I am remembering You. Now itself, take away My life. If You are not doing this, make Me to remember You always till the end of My life. (I want to leave My life while remembering You. Hence, You have to do one of the above two options.)]

43) Chiraadviraavaalasakinkiniinaam,

Venorapi shraantatanossvanena,

Nyaayyo viraamah kriyataam cha kinchit,

Sa me vilaapasya cha viikshanena.

[You have danced for a long time and the tiny bells of Your anklets are tired. You have sung on flute for a long time and the flute is also tired. It is justified to give some rest to those tiny bells and this flute. I am also weeping from a long time and it is also justified to give some rest to My weeping, which can be done by Your single look on Me.]

44) Vailakshanyam bhavaanmuurtam,

Sattvatattvam tamoruchi,

Kvachit jaatah kvachit pushtah,

Giitamekam param krutam.

[You are the contradiction personified. Your essence is white sattvam quality, but, Your colour is black. You are born somewhere (in the jail of Mathura city) and brought up somewhere else (in the village of cowherds). You have sung something (about good qualities) in the Gita and practised something else (stealing butter and dancing with Gopikas).]
