Bhaagavata Suutram: Chapter-1 (Suutrams 9-12)

(Aphorisms (Sūtrams) Composed By Shri Datta Swami As Answers To Questions Asked By His Devotees)

9) Putreaṇāyāṃ bandho na tu vyakti |

[Shri. Sudha Rani asked why is Shri Datta Swami always against children. Shri Datta Swami answers that Swami is not against children, but against the bond with children. Excess fascination for this bond is the very reason for corruption in the world. Everyone wants to earn wealth even in unjust ways for the sake of their children only. If this fascination for one’s own children is controlled, then corruption will be controlled, establishing world peace. That is why Swami is against the bond with children.]

10) Bhaktarūpa Bhagavān grāhya |

[Shri. Amudha asked whether we should follow devotees or God. Shri Datta Swami answers that one should follow God, who played the role of a devotee such as Rāma, Hanumān, Rādhā, Buddha, Ādiśaṅkara etc.]

11) Jñāna kārya bhaktis śuddha prema |

[Shri. Amudha asked what the role of emotions is in the spiritual path. Shri Datta Swami answers that either in Pravṛtti (worldly life) or in Nivṛtti (spiritual life), the knowledge and analysis with the help of intelligence is necessary before getting emotion (devotion) to implement anything in practice. Emotion after perfect knowledge is appreciable because of the safety given by the knowledge. The emotions about God coming from the proper spiritual knowledge help you to recognize the details of the divine personality of God resulting in true devotion. If emotions about God are coming even from the ignorance of God, it means your emotional devotion is based on some worldly desire to be fulfilled by God resulting in false devotion.]

12) Na sarvavyāpī mānuṣāvatāro mgya|

[Shri. Amudha asked how to see God in every living being and every non-living being. Shri Datta Swami answers that one should not waste one’s precious human birth in finding God in every item of creation because God is not present in every item of creation. Instead, one must search for the Human Incarnation in whom God has merged. If God exists everywhere in this world, God must exist even in every demon and every sinner. In that case, how was Rāvaṇa, who contained God, killed by Rāma who also contained God? Does it not finally result in God killing God, which is the suicide of God? The reality is that since Rāma contained God, He always followed the path of justice and since Rāvaṇa did not contain God, he always followed the path of injustice, owing to his bad mentality. God does not enter the world everywhere. He has entered the world only through a specific human being, who is called a Human Incarnation like Rāma.]
