Bhaagavata Suutram: Chapter-1 (Suutrams 5-8)

(Aphorisms (Sūtrams) Composed By Shri Datta Swami As Answers To Questions Asked By His Devotees)

5) Indravṛttena surāṇāmapyanya bandhāḥ |

[Shri. Chhanda asked how God can test the Angels in the upper worlds when they do not have the strongest bond for children. Shri Datta Swami answers that angels belong to a different race, which is far far higher than the human race. If the bond with children is absent, it does not mean that all other worldly bonds are absent. Ego, jealousy, attachment to race, greed for a powerful position, sexual attraction to some extent, etc. exist even in angels also. For example, Indra always tries to spoil the penance of sages, fearing about losing his position as ‘King of Angels’. He was attracted to Ahalyā in illegal way. You cannot say that just because one strongest bond (bond with children) does not exist in Angels, all other worldly bonds also do not exist in angels. The power of māyā pervades all over the creation.]

6) Duṣpravṛttyapekṣayā pravṛttiṃ stauti śrutiḥ |

[Shri. Bharath Krishna asked how You can say that the bond with issues (putreṣaṇā) is an obstacle in the spiritual path when the Veda says that one must enter gṛhastha āśrama before going for mokṣa, the last goal of human life. Shri Datta Swami answers that the Veda says that one must marry and have children by entering gṛhastha āśrama (Prajātantum mā vyvacchetsīḥ…). But here, the background context must be realized before understanding any spiritual concept. The context here is a person, who has uncontrollable lust and is sure to enter into Duṣpravṛtti (unjust worldly life) if the lust is not satisfied. Veda encourages such people to enter into family life by having a spouse so that his/her lust is satisfied in a justified way. Veda also encourages them to have children so that they don’t get addicted to enjoying sex continuously and become more and more lustful and thereby waste the precious human life. Moreover, by having children, the human race is continued on earth in service of God. Even if the Veda doesn’t stress about marriage, the majority will get married and have children anyway. When a devotee is truly devoted to God, he/she can directly enter saṃnyāsa āśrama from brahmacarya āśrama like Ādi Śaṅkara, Swami Vivekananda etc.]

7) Baliṣṭha bandhasya vṛkṣasya na vakrīkaraṇam |

[Shri. PVNM Sarma asked that by having a married life, one learns the lesson of how to love the child without aspiration so that he/she can divert such true love towards God, then why do You say that having children is not helpful to the spiritual path? Shri Datta Swami answers that one cannot achieve God by rituals and by producing children as said by the Veda (Na karmaṇā na prajayā dhanena tyāgena eke amṛtattva mānaśuḥ). The Veda clearly says that children are useless in uplifting the soul to please God. When a devotee is fully interested in pleasing his/her child by sacrificing time, money and energy, how can the devotee please God? Where are the time, energy and money to be sacrificed for God? The child is not God to uplift the parent, who is devoted to that child. In fact, the child is a soul, who came to collect the debt taken by you in your previous birth. When you already have children, it is inevitable to have the highest fascination for them. Therefore, when your bond with your child becomes very strong like a plant becoming tree, can you bend it towards God? Diversion of the worldly fascination that has already become strongest towards a worldly bond becomes practically impossible even though one may say it just for the satisfaction of theoretical angle.]

8) Bhaviṣya janmanīti janma janmasvāvṛttiḥ |

[Shri. PVNM Sarma asked that when the spiritual journey is very long taking millions of births, what is wrong in developing true love towards one’s own children in one birth and then divert it to God in the next births? Shri Datta Swami answers that the omnipotent God can sanction the human rebirth to a soul if there is a hope of its upliftment. Assuming that the soul is constantly getting human birth only, even then, the soul will be speaking this same sentence in every birth and will never develop the bond towards God. After some number of births, this fascination becomes stronger and stronger to finally result in the very strongest worldly bond. In such case, you cannot even dream that the soul will develop bond towards God since the soul in such stage will definitely enter the cycle of animals.]
