Paths of Nivrutti and Pravrutti

[December, 2003] Since Hanuman was incarnated in the monkey race, we respect every monkey as Hanuman. When Hanuman appears directly to us, to avoid mocking and neglecting His form, we are first developing reverence for the monkeys. In the same way, when the Paramatman incarnates in human form, and the Paramatman is to be served with love (path of Nivrutti), then the nature of serving mankind with love should first be developed in Pravrutti. Otherwise, if one behaves with negligence, hatred, jealousy and ego toward fellow human beings, these qualities may obstruct one from recognizing the Paramatman in human form tomorrow. Similar to worshiping every monkey as Hanuman, every human being should be loved and served as Maadhava. But there must be worldly wisdom in such worship, in the path of Pravrutti. If one catches the feet of an ordinary monkey, it will scratch one’s body. In the same way, when every human being is considered as Maadhava and served, bad people should be avoided. Any such service must be extended only to poor people and devotees. Once one enters the path of Nivrutti, the path of Pravrutti disappears.

The path of Pravritti is a way of establishing stability in the path of Nivrutti. The sugar used in Rava Laddu and Boondi Laddu is the same. Even though the sweetness is the same in both, the taste of Ravva Laddu is different from the taste of Boondi Laddu. So, both the laddus have the same sweet taste but have different tastes. In the same way, when the Paramatman takes media with different qualities of the human body, due to the differing qualities of the media, He also demonstrates various characteristics. This is in spite of all the incarnations having  the same nature (tattva). Narasimha and Shri Rama, the incarnations of the same Narayana, have different natures, but the nature of Paramatman, possessing divine qualities (Kalyana gunas), is one and the same in both incarnations. The divinity of destroying evil is one and the same in both incarnations. But, Shri Rama was appeared very peaceful and Shri Narasimha seen as very angry.

Shri Shirdi Sai Baba begged Gurudakshina as He took the body of a Brahmin. But when the same Sai, was in the body of Shri Sathya Sai Baba as Kshatriya, He said, "I am only a giver, but not a taker." This contrasting unity and difference are said by the Gita as "Avibhaktaṃ vibhakteṣu vibhakta miva ca sthitam". That is, though He is one seen in many forms, He appears differently. In another place, the Gita expressed the same meaning – "Ekatvena pṛthaktvena bahudhā viśvato mukham". Now it is being explained about the body of incarnation.

O My son! Listen carefully. The electricity pervades the wire. Wherever the wire is touched, the shock is experienced. Therefore, electricity cannot be separated from the wire. Electricity is the wire. The wire is the electricity. But the electricity did not transform as wire. After the electricity goes off, even if the wire is cut into pieces, the electricity is not destroyed. Similarly, Parabrahman took refuge in the human body and incarnated as Shri Krishna as per Gita – "Mānuṣīṃ tanu māśritam". Parabrahman pervades that human body from head to toe (Antarbahiśca tatsarvam); therefore, Shri Krishna is Parabrahmam. Parabrahmam is Shri Krishna. But at the time of the death of Krishna, Narayana, who is the Parabrahman, left Krishna's body and Partha cremated that body of Krishna. That does not mean, Narayana was also burned off. Narayana just took refuge in that human body called Krishna, but Narayana did not become the human body. Not knowing this, the ignorant think that Narayana had died and was cremated.
