What is the Duty of a Leader?

Updated with Part-2 on 30 Oct 2025

Part-1   Part-2

Part-1

A leader should always strive for the welfare of his people. But today's leaders are trying to earn money for themselves and for the development of their family members without worrying about the people. But Radha is not such a leader. No woman agrees to share her beloved with other women. But Radha spread her love for Krishna to other Gopikas. Thus, she aspired their upliftment. Krishna is fascinated by Radha because of her sweet, sacrificial love. No one knew about this unselfish nature of Radha untill today. Some people describe that when Krishna loved other Gopikas, Radha used to sit angrily. But this is completely false. Unnecessarily, the nature of a common woman is rubbed on Radha. Krishna is Lord Datta. Radha is Goddess Anagha. On this auspicious day of Anaghashtami, I, being Lord Datta, am revealing this true philosophy of Anagha.

Shankara acquired the wealth of spiritual knowledge from the Paramātman. But what did He do? He did not keep that wonderful spiritual knowledge for Himself. Shankara traveled all over India on foot and went from village to village, preaching spiritual knowledge to all, dispelling their ignorance. Therefore, He did not sit at home for His self-upliftment of the knowledge He received from God. He did not worry about His upliftment. His entire life was spent in preaching spiritual knowledge. He spent His whole life in spiritual knowledge of uplifting people. He felt like whatever He achieved was achieved by others also. So, service should always be for the sake of others. It should never be for your self-improvement. If you try to uplift others, you will be uplifted by the Lord. You need not concern about the fruit whether others are uplifted or not.

You should always try to uplift others. Even if your effort is failed, you should be persistent in that effort. If you are in such an effort till the last moment, God will be pleased and uplift you. So, Lord Datta finally embraced Shankara at the end of His incarnation and absorbed Shankara in Himself. Similarly, Mīrābai propagated Bhakti. She tried to convert other souls into devotees of Krishna by her devotional singing. Therefore, in the temple of Lord Jagannatha, Lord Datta absorbed Mīrā along with her physical body into Himself. Lord Datta is the creator, the maintainer and the destroyer. These three different activities are the forms of Brahmā, Vishnu and Shiva. Some worshiped Lord Datta as the creator, some worshipped Him as Mother, as a Father or as a Son or as a Brother.

Prahlada worshiped Lord Datta as Father, Dasharatha and Nanda as Son, and Lakshmana as Brother. By continuously serving the Lord, Lakshmana also participated in the war, which was the work of Swami. Some other devotees worshiped Swami as the creator, husband and as a darling. Rukmini and Radha are examples of these types of worship. Satyabhama always wanted Swami to stay with her. But Rukmini thought to share Swami with the other eight wives. That is why Rukmini won and Satyabhama lost in the weighing of Lord Krishna (Tulābhāram). But, Radha is greater than Rukmini in this aspect. The reason being that she wanted to share Swami with sixteen thousand Gopikas. Therefore, Radha's sacrifice is greater than Rukmini's sacrifice. That is why Rukmini was defeated by Radha when it is seen from that angle. One day, Radha came to Dwarka from Brundavan. Rukmini gave Radha the hot milk that she drinks every day. Radha has taken it. Later, when both of them went to Swami, Swami’s body was seen as red-hot. Both of them asked Swami in surprise about change in His body color. Swami said thus:

“Today, Radha drank hot milk. I am residing in Radha's heart. That's why I turned red-hot.” Then Rukmini asked. “O Swami! But I drink hot milk every day! But you never turned red-hot. Are You not in my heart?” Swami replied: “O Rukmini! Radha's love is greater than your love. You want to share Me only with eight wives. But, Radha was happy to share Me with sixteen thousand Gopikas in Brindavan. So, her sacrifice is greater than yours. And you are in My continuous association. So, you have developed negligence towards Me. So, accordingly My value is reduced due to continuous association. Radha stays far away from Me. So, she is more concerned about Me because of her separation.”

Part-2

Why is God invisible to us? If He is far away from being seen, His value will increase and we will be uplifted. Therefore, He is not appearing to us in view of our welfare only. Even if He comes in human form, then also He stays with us for some limited time and then He leaves that incarnation. If He is always available with us, we will become negligent toward Him. The Yadavas were constantly in association with Swami. They have been observing Swami’s miracles like Kālīyamardana, the lifting of Govardhana hill etc., since His childhood. Swami went to the Kurukshetra War and ordered that no one should drink alcohol until He returns back. The reason for this is that if the Yadavas drink alcohol, they will fight with each other and die due to the curse of Durvāsa, but the Yadavas ignored the order. Krishna returned on the 19th day. But by that time, the Yadavas had already drunk, fought each other and killed each other.

But why did the Yadavas, who had seen many miracles from Krishna’s childhood, disobey His orders? The reason for this is that Krishna always stayed with the Yadavas. Constant closeness and association made Krishna lose value in the eyes of the Yadavas. That is why God is invisible to us. Even if He appears to us, it is only for a few minutes and then He disappears. God does so to retain His value thus we are protected. Therefore, chanting, meditation, bhajan and service with sacrifice will only be beneficial to us. If all these worshipping techniques are body parts, they become functional only when they are accompanied by sacrifice. Body organs that have life only carry value. No matter how great one is, after death one’s eyes are plucked out with a knife. Such an act becomes a good deed. It is not a sin to pierce the eye with a knife because it is an act of eye donation. How? The body has no value when the life is gone out of it. But if the same eyes are plucked out of a living wild animal, it becomes a great sin. Why? Since life exists, there is value to the eyes and the body.

Lord Hanuman chanted Lord Rama's name, performed Rama bhajan and meditated on Him. But when did He do all these activities? Only after the completion of Rama's mission. He did not sing bhajans while Rama was waiting for the construction of the bridge on the ocean or during the battle with Ravana. He completely participated in the work of Rama. After the end of the war and after Rama ascended the throne, Hanuman continued to serve Lord Rama personally and did not stop His service. After Rama left the body, Hanuman did not have the opportunity to participate in His work and also could not do His personal service, so He chanted Rama's name while staying in the Kadalīvana. Moreover, whenever Lord Datta was incarnated, Hanuman incarnated as His servant. He was born as Bhima during the incarnation of Krishna.

So, O devotees of Lord Datta! Swami came to propagate true spiritual knowledge and devotion in the world. Let go of your chanting (Japa), penance (Tapa) and your regular worships and participate in the work of Swami. After Swami leaves this body and goes to Devgadh, then you can do your prayers. What is the use of your spiritual efforts (Sādhanā) without participating in Swami's work while He came here? This is the message of Swami on Anaghashtami.

Lord Krishna stayed in prison for six minutes. This means that He was born in a prison and stayed in the prison for six minutes! Lord Datta revealed that secret as follows: "During the incarnation of Rama, Bharata came to the forests to convey the news of the death of their father Dasharatha and prayed Rama to rule the kingdom. Sage Jabali preached Lord Rama to accept the kingdom. Then Shri Rama enlightened Jabali with spiritual knowledge and taught him the importance of confining to the truth. Then, Jabali’s ignorance is removed and he became a servant of Shri Rama. But in the case of Ravana, such preaching of spiritual knowledge by Shri Rama did not take place. Rama killed him without any preaching.

Later, when Ravana complained about this behavior of Rama in the presence of the Kalabhairava, Lord Datta, who was incarnated as Rama, had to stand as a defendant. Ravana argued that if Jabali is a Brahmin, he is also a Brahmin and if Jabali has done a great penance, then he has also equally done a great penance. So, unlike in Jabali's case, his case is not justified and is discriminated. Ravana further argued that as Shri Rama enlightened Jabali, He could have also enlightened him in time. Kalabhairava agreed to Ravana’s argument that Shri Rama acted with partiality and He was imposed of going to jail and He was sentenced to prison for six minutes. Lord Datta spent six minutes in prison during the incarnation as Shri Krishna.
