ŚRĪ DURGĀṢṬAKAM
श्री दुर्गाष्टकम्
[Eight verses on Goddess Durga]
ओं दुर्गायै नमः ।
Oṃ Durgāyai namaḥ ।
[Salutations to Goddess Durga, who is Aadiparaashakti]
उमया रमया विरिञ्चिदेव्या, मिलिताभि र्महिषासुरक्षयाय ।
उदिते! सुरबृन्दगीयमाने! विजयाद्रेः कनकाम्ब! पाहि दुर्गे! ॥1॥
Umayā ramayā viriñcidevyā,
Militābhi rmahiṣāsurakṣayāya ।
Udite! surabṛndagīyamāne!
Vijayādreḥ Kanakāmba! Pāhi Durge! ॥1॥
[You were formed by the union of Goddess Saraswati, Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Parvati to kill the demon called Mahishaasura. You are praised by all groups of angels. O Kanaka Durga! Shining on Vijayawada Mountain, I worship You, please protect me.]
दशहस्तधृतायुधै र्महोग्रैः, घनशार्दूलमहांस सन्निषण्णे! ।
समरान्तजयोत्सवार्च्यमाने! विजयाद्रेः कनकाम्ब! पाहि दुर्गे! ॥2॥
Daśahastadhṛtāyudhai rmahograiḥ,
Ghanaśārdūlamahāṃsa sanniṣaṇṇe! ।
Samarāntajayotsavārcyamāne!
Vijayādreḥ Kanakāmba! Pāhi Durge! ॥2॥
[You were wearing very violent weapons in Your ten hands. You were sitting on the backside of the huge tiger. You were worshipped in the festival of victory after 10 days war. O Kanaka Durga! Shining on Vijayawada Mountain, I worship You, please protect me.]
कमलं निज दक्षिणाङ्कनीतं, पद मुत्तान मुपोह्य वाम माहो! ।
शरणागत रक्षणाय भासि, विजयाद्रेः कनकाम्ब! पाहि दुर्गे! ॥3॥
Kamalaṃ nija dakṣiṇāṅkanītaṃ,
Pada muttāna mupohya vāma māho! ।
Śaraṇāgata rakṣaṇāya bhāsi,
Vijayādreḥ Kanakāmba! Pāhi Durge! ॥3॥
[You were placing the twisted left foot-lotus flower on the right thigh and sitting on the tiger. Your pose of sitting clearly shows that You were ready to protect Your devotees. O Kanaka Durga! Shining on Vijayawada Mountain, I worship You, please protect me.]
कनकद्युति भासमानकाये! कनकव्याघ्र महोग्रवाहनस्थे! ।
कनकाभरणणै र्विराजमाने! विजयाद्रेः कनकाम्ब! पाहि दुर्गे! ॥4॥
Kanakadyuti bhāsamānakāye!
Kanakavyāghra mahogravāhanasthe! ।
Kanakābharaṇaṇai rvirājamāne!
Vijayādreḥ Kanakāmba! Pāhi Durge! ॥4॥
[You were shining with Your gold-coloured body. You were also sitting on the wildest tiger, which is also in gold colour. You were also shining very much by wearing pure gold jewels. O Kanaka Durga! Shining on Vijayawada Mountain, I worship You, please protect me.]
तव चित्तदयाब्धि वत्सलत्वा, त्प्रविभक्ता ऽऽयुधशक्ति रात्मजेषु ।
विधि विष्णु शिवादि दैवतेषु, विजयाद्रेः कनकाम्ब! पाहि दुर्गे! ॥5॥
Tava cittadayābdhi vatsalatvā,
Tpravibhaktā ''yudhaśakti rātmajeṣu ।
Vidhi viṣṇu śivādi daivateṣu,
Vijayādreḥ Kanakāmba! Pāhi Durge! ॥5॥
[Your mind is like a ocean of affection on Your children. Due to this affection, You placed the power of Your weapons in Your children like God Brahma, God Vishnu, God Shiva and other important angels (All are called children only because the media of all Gods and all souls are created by Adiparaashakti as Divine Mother). O Kanaka Durga! Shining on Vijayawada Mountain, I worship You, please protect me.]
शरणं जननीति याचकाय, निजभक्ताय सुताय दुर्निवारम् ।
अभयं प्रददासि पाणिना त्वं, विजयाद्रेः कनकाम्ब! पाहि दुर्गे! ॥6॥
Śaraṇaṃ jananīti yācakāya,
Nijabhaktāya sutāya durnivāram ।
Abhayaṃ pradadāsi pāṇinā tvaṃ,
Vijayādreḥ Kanakāmba! Pāhi Durge! ॥6॥
[If any devotee prays before You “O Mother! Give Your protection to me, Your child, who surrenders to You”, You immediately give protection by Your hand and such protection cannot be broken by anyone in this creation. O Kanaka Durga! Shining on Vijayawada Mountain, I worship You, please protect me.]
जगतामुदयाय भारती त्वं, स्थितये मङ्गलदेवता विभूत्या ।
प्रलयाय महेश्वरी भवानी, विजयाद्रेः कनकाम्ब! पाहि दुर्गे! ॥7॥
Jagatāmudayāya bhāratī tvaṃ,
Sthitaye maṅgaladevatā vibhūtyā ।
Pralayāya maheśvarī bhavānī,
Vijayādreḥ Kanakāmba! Pāhi Durge! ॥7॥
[You are Goddess Saraswati while creating all these worlds. You are Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of entire auspiciousness, for maintaining these worlds with Your miraculous powers. You are Goddess Parvati, who is the wife of God Bhava or Maheshvara, to destroy this world in the end. O Kanaka Durga! Shining on Vijayawada Mountain, I worship You, please protect me.]
अमरा महिमार्णवा स्समे ऽपि, तव पादान्त्यनखार्क पादमात्राः ।
अयि! कारण कार्य मूल शक्ते! विजयाद्रेः कनकाम्ब! पाहि दुर्गे! ॥8॥
Amarā mahimārṇavā ssame 'pi,
Tava pādāntyanakhārka pādamātrāḥ ।
Ayi! kāraṇa kārya mūla śakte!
Vijayādreḥ Kanakāmba! Pāhi Durge! ॥8॥
[All the deities and angels having different miraculous powers are just the rays of Your last foot-nail only. You are the root power of any cause and any effect. O Kanaka Durga! Shining on Vijayawada Mountain, I worship You, please protect me.]
इदं दुर्गाष्टकं दिव्यं, काश्यपेन कृतं पठन् ।
यदिच्छति तदाप्नोति, शक्ते रप्रतिकूलतः ॥
Idaṃ durgāṣṭakaṃ divyaṃ, Kāśyapena kṛtaṃ paṭhan ।
Yadicchati tadāpnoti, Śakte Rapratikūlataḥ ॥
[This prayer of 8 verses on Goddess Kanaka Durga is composed by Shri Datta Swami, who was born in Kashyapa gotra. The devotee reciting this prayer will attain anything desired by him/her since there is no opposing force to Mahaa Shakti Durga.]
