Śrī Matsyāvatārāṣṭakam
[Eight Verses on the Fish Incarnation of God Vishnu]

ॐ नमो नारायणाय । ॐ नमो विष्णवे |
Oṃ Namo Nārāyaṇāya । Oṃ Namo Vishnave ।

[Salutations to God Narayana, Who is God Vishnu]

चतुर्वेद चौर्यात्खलं सोमकं तं, समुद्रे समन्विष्य दंष्ट्राञ्चलेन ।
सुराभ्यर्थना द्दारयन्तं समन्तात्, भजे नाथ नारायणं मत्स्यरूपम्‌ ॥1॥

Caturveda cauryātkhalaṃ somakaṃ taṃ,
Samudre samanviṣya daṃṣṭrāñcalena ।
Surābhyarthanād dārayantaṃ samantād,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Matsyarūpam ॥1॥

[With the edges of Your sharp jaws, You have searched for the cunning demon, Somaka, who stole the four Vedas from God Brahma. Due to the prayer of angels, You have torn the demon into pieces throughout his body. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of fish.]

लये मग्नभूवार्थि कल्लोलघोषे, स्वपादैकसक्तान् समादाय भक्तान् ।
महानाव मेकं चरन्तं तरन्तं, भजे नाथ नारायणं मत्स्यरूपम्‌ ॥2॥

Laye magnabhūvārthi kallolaghoṣe,
Svapādaikasaktān samādāya bhaktān ।
Mahānāva mekaṃ carantaṃ tarantaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Matsyarūpam ॥2॥

[In the final dissolution, the earth is drowned by sea generating very huge sounds and some deserving good devotees could catch Your feet. To save them from drowning, You lifted them up and wandered in the water like a big ship. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of fish.]

मुनिभ्य श्श्रितेभ्य स्सदा दर्शयन्तं, जलैः पूरकं कुम्भकं रेचकं च ।
स्वयोगाय कर्तव्य मन्तर्यमाय, भजे नाथ नारायणं मत्स्यरूपम्‌ ॥3॥

Munibhya śśritebhya ssadā darśayantaṃ,
Jalaiḥ pūrakaṃ kumbhakaṃ recakaṃ ca ।
Svayogāya kartavya mantaryamāya,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Matsyarūpam ॥3॥

[You were inhaling (Puurakam) the water and exhaling (Recakam) the same water outside after retaining it for some time (Kumbhakam) in the head. You were as if preaching the technique of Praanaayaama to the sages, who surrendered to You to attain the internal control of mind. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of fish.]

महापुच्छविक्षेप विच्छेद्यमान-भ्रमत्तुङ्गरङ्गत्तरङ्गोर्ध्ववर्षैः ।
स्वनामैक गीतान् मुनीन् नन्दयन्तं, भजे नाथ नारायणं मत्स्यरूपम् ॥4॥

Mahāpucchavikṣepa vicchedyamāna -
Bhramattuṅgaraṅgattaraṅgordhvavarṣaiḥ ।
Svanāmaika gītān munīn nandayantaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Matsyarūpam ॥4॥

[Your tail was violently beating the water due to which the water waves were broken with circulation, rising up and falling down like heavy rain. You were pleasing sages, who were singing Your name through songs. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of fish.]

भवाब्धेर् महाब्धेश्च नानाग्रहेभ्यः, सदा रक्षितान् तारयन्तं स्वमूर्ध्ना ।
दयासागरं सागरे केलिलोलं, भजे नाथ नारायणं मत्स्यरूपम्‌ ॥5॥

Bhavābdher mahābdheśca nānāgrahebhyaḥ,
Sadā rakṣitān tārayantaṃ svamūrdhnā ।
Dayāsāgaraṃ sāgare kelilolaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Matsyarūpam ॥5॥

[You were saving Your devotees not only from the physical ocean, but also from the worldly ocean, from the bites of several cruel gigantic fish (worldly difficulties) by carrying Your devotees on Your head. You Yourself are a mighty ocean of kindness and still playing in this mighty ocean in final dissolution. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of fish.]

सदा पापकृत्येषु सर्वेषु सर्वान्, जले मज्जयन्तं सतश्चोद्धरन्तम्‌ ।
स्वयं सर्वसाक्ष्यादिवाक्षि स्वरूपं, भजे नाथ नारायणं मत्स्यरूपम्‌ ॥6॥

Sadā pāpakṛtyeṣu sarveṣu sarvān,
Jale majjayantaṃ sataścoddharantam ।
Svayaṃ sarvasākṣyādivākṣi svarūpaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Matsyarūpam ॥6॥

[You were always drowning the sinners doing all types of sins in the worldly ocean and uplifting Your good devotees. You are in the form of an eye, showing that You are the universal eye, standing as the witness, observing all deeds done by souls. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of fish.]

युवत्यक्षिमीनैर् भवाम्भोधिमग्नं, सकृत् तात रक्षेति वाचा रुदन्तम्‌ ।
समुद्धृत्य कैवल्यदातार मेकं, भजे नाथ नारायणं मत्स्यरूपम्‌ ॥7॥

Yuvatyakṣimīnair bhavāmbhodhimagnaṃ,
Sakṛt tāta rakṣeti vācā rudantam ।
Samuddhṛtya kaivalyadātāra mekaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Matsyarūpam ॥7॥

[When a devoted soul is drowned in the worldly ocean, attracted by the fish-like eyes of females and then weeps “O Divine Father! O Incarnation of Fish! Please protect and uplift me”, then You will uplift him with Your kindness and give salvation. You alone are capable of such kindness. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of fish.]

पुरो दुष्कृताम्भोनिधिग्रस्यमानः, प्रभो! पाहि मीनावतारेति याचे ।
सतीतात मुल्लोलयन्तं पयोधिं, भजे नाथ नारायणं मत्स्यरूपम्‌ ॥8॥

Puro duṣkṛtāmbhonidhigrasyamānaḥ,
Prabho! pāhi mīnāvatāreti yāce ।
Satītāta mullolayantaṃ payodhiṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Matsyarūpam ॥8॥

[“I am swallowed by the bad deeds done in the previous births. O Lord! O Fish Incarnation! Please protect me” – In this way, I pray You. You are disturbing the ocean, Your father-in-law, by playing with water for some time, just for fun. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of fish.]

इदं मत्स्यावतारस्य, काश्यपेन कृतं पठन् ।
अष्टकं ह्यष्टकष्टाब्धि-समुत्तीर्णो भवेत् ध्रुवम्‌ ॥

Idaṃ matsyāvatārasya, Kāśyapena kṛtaṃ paṭhan ।
Aṣṭakaṃ hyaṣṭakaṣṭābdhi-Samuttīrṇo bhaved dhruvam ॥

[This prayer on the Fish Incarnation of Lord Vishnu is composed by Shri Datta Swami, born in Kaashyapa gotra. If one reads this, he/she will immediately come out of the 8 forms of oceans of difficulties and there is no doubt in this.]
