ŚRĪ BUDDHĀVATĀRĀṢṬAKAM
श्रीबुद्धावताराष्टकम्‌
[Eight Verses on the Buddha Incarnation of God Vishnu]

ॐ नमो नारायणाय । ॐ नमो विष्णवे ।

Oṃ Namo Nārāyaṇāya । Oṃ Namo Nārāyaṇāya ।

[Salutations to God Narayana, Who is God Vishnu]

अहिंसां स्वकैवल्यमार्गं वदन्तं, महासात्त्विकाजादि जन्तुष्वपाराम्‌ ।
दयां दर्शयन्तं क्रतू न्वारयन्तं, भजे नाथ नारायणं बुद्धदेवम्‌ ॥1॥

Ahiṃsāṃ svakaivalyamārgaṃ vadantaṃ,
Mahāsāttvikājādi jantuṣvapārām ।
Dayāṃ darśayantaṃ kratū nvārayantaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Buddhadevam ॥1॥

[You, God Vishnu, incarnated as Buddha, were always telling that the path to reach You is the climax non-violence, especially in the case of very soft-natured animals like goats. You were always showing kindness and obstructing sacrifices in which these animals are killed. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of God Buddha.]

महाबोधि वृक्षस्य मूले चिराय, तपस्यन्तमन्तः कृपावारि राशिम्‌ ।
परित्यज्य भार्यां सुतं राज्यभोगं, भजे नाथ नारायणं बुद्धदेवम्‌ ॥2॥

Mahābodhi vṛkṣasya mūle cirāya,
Tapasyantamantaḥ kṛpāvāri rāśim ।
Parityajya bhāryāṃ sutaṃ rājyabhogaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Buddhadevam ॥2॥

[You were doing penance for a long time under the great peepal tree and You were like an infinite ocean of mercy. You sacrificed Your wife, Your only son and the pleasures of kings. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of God Buddha.]

शिरो मुण्डकाषायवासोवसानं, सरोजायताक्षि स्फुरत्प्राणिदैन्यम्‌ ।
करे दण्डमुर्व्यां चरन्तं समन्ता, द्भजे नाथ नारायणं बुद्धदेवम्‌ ॥3॥

Śiro muṇḍakāṣāyavāsovasānaṃ,
Sarojāyatākṣi sphuratprāṇidainyam ।
Kare daṇḍamurvyāṃ carantaṃ samantāt,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Buddhadevam ॥3॥

[You were possessing completely shaven head that is covered by orange robe, which continues as Your cloth on the entire body. Your eyes were long like lotus flowers and were expressing the kindness on animals sacrificed. You were holding a supporting stick and wandering on the entire earth. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of God Buddha.]

गलच्छेदकर्मण्यजां नीयमानां, कृताश्रुप्रवाहां समादाय वत्से ।
समालिङ्ग्य चोच्चैस्स्वरेणा ऽऽरुदन्तं, भजे नाथ नारायणं बुद्धदेवम्‌ ॥4॥

Galacchedakarmaṇyajāṃ nīyamānāṃ,
Kṛtāśrupravāhāṃ samādāya vatse ।
Samāliṅgya coccaissvareṇā ''rudantaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Buddhadevam ॥4॥

[While an innocent goat was taken to the sacrifice for cutting its neck and tears were flowing from the eyes of the goat, You took that goat, embraced it to Your chest and You wept very loud. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of God Buddha.]

अहं सर्वभूतान्तरात्मेति गीतं, पुनर्बोधयन्तं पशुच्छेदहिंसाम्‌ ।
स्वकीया मिवा ऽऽवेदयन्तं स्वबाष्पैः, भजे नाथ नारायणं बुद्धदेवम्‌ ॥5॥

Ahaṃ sarvabhūtāntarātmeti gītaṃ,
Punarbodhayantaṃ paśucchedahiṃsām ।
Svakīyā mivā ''vedayantaṃ svabāṣpaiḥ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Buddhadevam ॥5॥

[After preaching the Gita as God Krishna previously, You were again preaching that You are the internal personality of all living beings and You are again and again supporting non-violence towards any living being. You were preaching as if the violence of living beings is as if it is the violence done to Yourself. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of God Buddha.]

परब्रह्मवाचा मतीतं तदेव, वहन्तं च मौनं परब्रह्मतत्त्वे ।
अविद्भिर्मतं नास्तिकं मौनहेतोः, भजे नाथ नारायणं बुद्धदेवम्‌ ॥6॥

Parabrahmavācā matītaṃ tadeva,
Vahantaṃ ca maunaṃ Parabrahmatattve ।
Avidbhirmataṃ nāstikaṃ maunahetoḥ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Buddhadevam ॥6॥

[While preaching the philosophy of the ultimate God called Parabrahman, You were preaching It through silence because Parabrahman is beyond words and imagination as per the Veda (Yato vaaco…- Veda, Mouna vyaakhyaa prakatita Parabrahma tattvam - Shankara). Your silence is misunderstood as atheism by Your ignorant followers, who stamped You as an atheist. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of God Buddha.]

अहिंसा परो धर्म इत्येकवाक्यं, सदा वाचयन्तं समप्राणिसौम्यम्‌ ।
दया प्रेम वारांनिधिं पारशून्यं, भजे नाथ नारायणं बुद्धदेवम्‌ ॥7॥

Ahiṃsā paro dharma ityekavākyaṃ,
Sadā vācayantaṃ samaprāṇisaumyam ।
Dayā prema vārāṃnidhiṃ pāraśūnyaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Buddhadevam ॥7॥

[You were always preaching only one statement that non-violence is the highest justice and You were always kindful to all the living beings. You were the ocean of kindness and love, which has no boundary. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of God Buddha.]

अहिंसा पथा प्रेममार्गं स्वलब्ध्यै, जगज्जीवजालाय सन्दर्शयन्तम्‌ ।
मयि प्रेमवार्धिं च कल्लोलयन्तं, भजे नाथ नारायणं बुद्धदेवम्‌ ॥8॥

Ahiṃsā pathā premamārgaṃ svalabdhyai,
Jagajjīvajālāya sandarśayantam ।
Mayi premavārdhiṃ ca kallolayantaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Buddhadevam ॥8॥

[You were always demonstrating to all the souls existing in the world that by following the path of non-violence and love, any soul can reach You. You were bringing a tsunami in the love of ocean in Me. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of God Buddha.]

बुद्धदेवाष्टकं दिव्यं, काश्यपेन कृतं पठन् ।
अहिंसारतिराप्नोति, विष्णुप्रीतिकर स्सुखम्‌ ॥

Buddhadevāṣṭakaṃ divyaṃ, Kāśyapena kṛtaṃ paṭhan ।
Ahiṃsāratirāpnoti, Viṣṇuprītikara ssukham ॥

[This prayer on God Buddha is divine and is composed by Shri. Datta Swami, who is born in Kaashyapa gotra will certainly develop a lot of interest in the non-violence and such devotee will attain eternal bliss and will create pleasure in the heart of God Vishnu.]
