Śrī Rāṃāvatārāṣṭakam
श्रीरामावताराष्टकम्‌
[8 Verses on the Śrī Rāma Incarnation of God Vishnu]

ॐ नमो नारायणाय । ॐ नमो विष्णवे ।
Oṃ Namo Nārāyaṇāya । Oṃ Namo Viṣṇave ।

[Salutations to God Narayana, Who is God Vishnu]

अहल्या शिलाविग्रहं पादधूल्या, पुनर्जीवयन्तं स्त्रियं पावयन्तम्‌ ।
चलत्काकपक्षं प्रभुं बालरूपं, भजे नाथ नारायणं रामचन्द्रम्‌ ॥1॥

Ahalyā śilāvigrahaṃ pādadhūlyā,
Punarjīvayantaṃ striyaṃ pāvayantam‌ ।
Calatkākapakṣaṃ prabhuṃ bālarūpaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Rāmacandram‌ ॥1॥

[Ahalya, by her sin, turned into a stony statue for a long time. By the dust of Your feet, You turned her into alive personality and purified her. O Lord! On that occasion You were just a boy. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Shri. Rama Chandra.]

धनुर्भङ्गधीरं विदर्भेशपुत्र्या, ह्रिया सस्पृहं चेक्ष्यमाणं चलाक्ष्या ।
नभश्श्यामलं कोमलं मोहनाङ्गं, भजे नाथ नारायणं रामचन्द्रम्‌ ॥2॥

Dhanurbhaṅgadhīraṃ vidarbheśaputryā,
Hriyā saspṛhaṃ cekṣyamāṇaṃ calākṣyā ।
Nabhaśśyāmalaṃ komalaṃ mohanāṅgaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Rāmacandram‌ ॥2॥

[You were with high majesty while breaking the bow of Lord Shiva. In that time, Sita, the daughter of King of Vidarbha, was seeing You with frequently moving eyes along with shyness and fascination. You were pale black like the early rainy cloud, very tender and very fascinating. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Shri Rama Chandra.]

पितुर्वाक्यहेतो र्विहाय स्वराज्यं, स्वयं तापसं वल्कलाङ्गं वनस्थम्‌ ।
मुनीनां च मोहावहं चापहस्तं, भजे नाथ नारायणं रामचन्द्रम्‌ ॥3॥

Piturvākyaheto rvihāya svarājyaṃ,
Svayaṃ tāpasaṃ valkalāṅgaṃ vanastham‌ ।
Munīnāṃ ca mohāvahaṃ cāpahastaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Rāmacandram‌ ॥3॥

[Due to the word of Your father, You left Your kingdom, which is Your rightly inherited property. For the same reason, You became a Sage wearing bark cloth and stayed in the forest. You were possessing bow and arrow in the hands and Your beauty fascinated even the Sages! I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Shri Rama Chandra.]

जटायु स्समाश्लेष दुःखं दयाब्धिं, शबर्यार्चितं दष्टदृष्टैः फलैश्च ।
हनूमन्तमाख्यान्त मप्यन्यवेषम्‌, भजे नाथ नारायणं रामचन्द्रम्‌ ॥4॥

Jaṭāyu ssamāśleṣa duḥkhaṃ dayābdhiṃ,
Śabaryārcitaṃ daṣṭadṛṣṭaiḥ phalaiśca ।
Hanūmantamākhyānta mapyanyaveṣam‌,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Rāmacandram‌ ॥4॥

[You embraced the wounded bird called Jataayu, who fought against Raavana in order to liberate Sita from Raavana. You were the ocean of kindness. You were fed with the bitten fruits by Shabari to test the sweetness of the fruit. You called Hanuman with His name even though He was in other type of orange robe. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Shri Rama Chandra.]

धनुः कर्षणादेव वार्धिं नयन्तं, प्रपन्नं शरै र्दैत्यवंशान्तकं च ।
दशास्याब्जमालां भुवे चार्पयन्तं, भजे नाथ नारायणं रामचन्द्रम्‌ ॥5॥

Dhanuḥ karṣaṇādeva vārdhiṃ nayantaṃ,
Prapannaṃ śarai rdaityavaṃśāntakaṃ ca ।
Daśāsyābjamālāṃ bhuve cārpayantaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Rāmacandram‌ ॥5॥

[You have brought the ocean to the stage of a servant just by blowing the string of the bow present in Your hand. By Your arrows, You ended all the dynasty of demons. You presented the garland of 10 heads of Raavana to the earth as if You were worshipping the earth. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Shri Rama Chandra.]

त्रिभि स्सोदरै रङ्कसीताकलत्रं, मुनीन्द्रै स्सुरैः पौरदैत्यै स्समेतम्‌ ।
धनुर्बाणपाणिं च पट्टाभिषिक्तं, भजे नाथ नारायणं रामचन्द्रम्‌ ॥6॥

Tribhi ssodarai raṅkasītākalatraṃ,
Munīndrai ssuraiḥ pauradaityai ssametam‌ ।
Dhanurbāṇapāṇiṃ ca paṭṭābhiṣiktaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Rāmacandram‌ ॥6॥

[Your wife, Sita, is sitting on Your left thigh and You were served by Your three brothers called Lakshmana, Bharata and Shatrughna. You were surrounded by Sages, angels, citizens and good demons on the occasion of the end of Raavana. You were wearing bow and arrow in Your hand and You were enthroned as King of Ayodhya. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Shri Rama Chandra.]

दशास्यं च पायां शरण्यं व्रजेच्चे, दिति व्याहरन्तं दयाप्रेमसिन्धुम्‌ ।
सतीबाण वाक्येष्वनन्यव्रतस्थं, भजे नाथ नारायणं रामचन्द्रम्‌ ॥7॥

Daśāsyaṃ ca pāyāṃ śaraṇyaṃ vrajecce,
Diti vyāharantaṃ dayāpremasindhum‌ ।
Satībāṇa vākyeṣvananyavratasthaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Rāmacandram‌ ॥7॥

[You were an infinite ocean of kindness and love because You said that You will protect even Raavana if Raavana surrenders to You. You are always using the arrow only once. You are having only one wife throughout Your life and You are always speaking only one word without any lie. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Shri Rama Chandra.]

अहो! सद्गुणाब्धिं क्वचि च्चाप्यदोषं, नरादर्श मेकैक धर्मावतारम्‌ ।
भवं तारयन्तं स्वनाम्ना पवित्रं, भजे नाथ नारायणं रामचन्द्रम्‌ ॥8॥

Aho! sadguṇābdhiṃ kvaci ccāpyadoṣaṃ,
Narādarśa mekaika dharmāvatāram‌ ।
Bhavaṃ tārayantaṃ svanāmnā pavitraṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Rāmacandram‌ ॥8॥

[Oh! God Raama! You are the only one infinite ocean of good qualities and You are the only one without any defect. You are only the one ideal for all humanity. You are the Incarnation of perfect justice. You are transforming this humanity of the world into sacred sages. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Shri Rama Chandra.]

रामचन्द्राष्टकं दिव्यं, काश्यपेन कृतं पठन् ।
साक्षाद्भवति संसारा, न्मुक्त स्सर्वभयादपि ॥

Rāmacandrāṣṭakaṃ divyaṃ, Kāśyapena kṛtaṃ paṭhan ।
Sākṣādbhavati saṃsārāt, Mukta ssarvabhayādapi ॥

[This prayer on God Shri Raama is composed by Shri Datta Swami, who is born in Kashyapa gotra. If this is recited by any devotee, the devotee shall be liberated from this worldly ocean and gets salvation. Such devotee will also be liberated from all types of fear.]
