ŚRĪ NṚSIṂHĀVATĀRĀṢṬAKAM
श्रीनृसिंहावताराष्टकम्‌
[Eight verses on the Man-Lion-Incarnation of God Vishnu]

ॐ नमो नारायणाय । ॐ नमो विष्णवे ।
Oṃ Namo Nārāyaṇāya । Oṃ Namo Vishnave ।

[Salutations to God Narayana, Who is God Vishnu]

गदाघात भिन्ना न्मणिस्तम्भमध्या, च्छटाभि स्सटाभिः परै र्दुर्निरीक्ष्यम्‌ ।
महाक्रोधनादं हिरण्याभिपातं, भजे नाथ नारायणं श्रीनृसिंहम्‌ ॥1॥

Gadāghāta bhinnā nmaṇistambhamadhyā,
Cchaṭābhi ssaṭābhiḥ parai rdurnirīkṣyam ।
Mahākrodhanādaṃ hiraṇyābhipātaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Śrī Nṛsiṃham ॥1॥

[When the demon Hiranyakashipu gave violent blows of mace and broke the pillar made of gems, You jumped on the demon Hiranyakashipu from the broken pillar with radiant rays of light mixed with Your shining hair (mane) of the head. Such scene could not be tolerated by the normal eyes. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Man-Lion.]

सटास्स्फोटयन्तं मुहुर्गर्जनोग्रं, विवृत्तास्य दंष्ट्रा शिखा दर्शयन्तम्‌ ।
स्फुरन्नेत्र संवर्त वह्निप्रकाशं, भजे नाथ नारायणं श्रीनृसिंहम्‌ ॥2॥

Saṭāssphoṭayantaṃ muhurgarjanograṃ,
Vivṛttāsya daṃṣṭrā śikhā darśayantam ।
Sphurannetra saṃvarta vahniprakāśaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Śrī Nṛsiṃham ॥2॥

[You were violently shaking Your hair(mane)-covered head, while Your loud wild roars echoed like thunder. Opening Your mouth wide, You revealed the sharp tips of Your fangs. You shined like the blazing Samvarta fire at the time of cosmic dissolution. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Man-Lion.]

क्षमासान्द्रभूतं चिरक्रोधराशिं, हठाद्भिद्यमानाग्निशैलं द्रवन्तम्‌ ।
स्वभक्तव्यधारोषजाज्वल्यमानं, भजे नाथ नारायणं श्रीनृसिंहम्‌ ॥3॥

Kṣamāsāndrabhūtaṃ cirakrodharāśiṃ,
Haṭhādbhidyamānāgniśailaṃ dravantam ।
Svabhaktavyadhāroṣajājvalyamānaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Śrī Nṛsiṃham ॥3॥

[You were the long-standing anger-fire, which was solidified by patience to become a fire-mountain, which suddenly exploded, sprinkling the liquid fire. You were burning due to the suffering of Your devotee, Prahlaada. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Man-Lion.]

निजाङ्के निवेश्या ऽसुरं विह्वलाङ्गं, नखै र्दारयन्तं क्षिपन्तं तदस्रम्‌ ।
तदान्त्रावलीकण्ठमालं नदन्तं, भजे नाथ नारायणं श्रीनृसिंहम्‌ ॥4॥

Nijāṅke niveśyā 'suraṃ vihvalāṅgaṃ,
Nakhai rdārayantaṃ kṣipantaṃ tadasram ।
Tadāntrāvalīkaṇṭhamālaṃ nadantaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Śrī Nṛsiṃham ॥4॥

[On Your both thighs, You have spread the demon, who has become dumbstruck due to fear. Then, You were tearing his body with Your nails and throwing out his blood with both hands. You have plucked his digestive system and worn it like a garland around Your neck. You were roaring very much. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Man-Lion.]

न केना ऽपि देवेन लक्ष्म्या ऽपि शान्तं, मुहुर्भ्रामयन्तं मुखं घोररावम्‌ ।
विलोक्य स्वभक्तं प्रपन्नं प्रसन्नं, भजे नाथ नारायणं श्रीनृसिंहम्‌ ॥5॥

Na kenā 'pi devena Lakṣmyā 'pi śāntaṃ,
Muhurbhrāmayantaṃ mukhaṃ ghorarāvam ।
Vilokya svabhaktaṃ prapannaṃ prasannaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Śrī Nṛsiṃham ॥5॥

[You were not pacified by any angel, including even Goddess Lakshmi. You were rotating Your face with very violent roaring. Still, when You saw Your devotee surrendering to You, You became peaceful and pleasant. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Man-Lion.]

स्वपादग्रहं दैत्यबालं विलोकै, र्दयासारपूरै श्चिरं स्नापयन्तम्‌ ।
तदीयोत्तमाङ्गार्पिताभीतिपाणिं, भजे नाथ नारायणं श्रीनृसिंहम्‌ ॥6॥

Svapādagrahaṃ daityabālaṃ vilokai,
Dayāsārapūrai ściraṃ snāpayantam ।
Tadīyottamāṅgārpitābhītipāṇiṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Śrī Nṛsiṃham ॥6॥

[When the boy, Prahlaada, caught Your feet, You started bathing him with Your wet looks formed by the essence of infinite kindness. Immediately, You placed Your hand showing protection on his head. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Man-Lion.]

तथा जन्महेतुं तमो ऽज्ञानदैत्यं, विदीर्णं ममापीह कृत्वा ऽभयं मे ।
प्रयच्छन्त मङ्गे नरंसिंह मास्ये, भजे नाथ नारायणं श्रीनृसिंहम्‌ ॥7॥

Tathā janmahetuṃ tamo 'jñānadaityaṃ,
Vidīrṇaṃ mamāpīha kṛtvā 'bhayaṃ me ।
Prayacchanta maṅge naraṃsiṃha māsye,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Śrī Nṛsiṃham ॥7॥

[In the similar way, the cause of my birth is also a blind demon. You are tearing him also and giving me Your hand, showing protection. You are having human body with the face of a violent lion. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Man-Lion.]

वराभीतिमुद्राद्वयं शङ्खचक्रे, करै र्बिभ्रतं श्रीसतीं चाङ्कपीठे ।
महानन्दकारुण्य वात्सल्यमूर्तिं, भजे नाथ नारायणं श्रीनृसिंहम्‌ ॥8॥

Varābhītimudrādvayaṃ śaṅkhacakre,
Karai rbibhrataṃ śrīsatīṃ cāṅkapīṭhe ।
Mahānandakāruṇya vātsalyamūrtiṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Śrī Nṛsiṃham ॥8॥

[You possess two modes of giving boons and giving protection with two hands. With the other two hands, You possess the conch shell and rotating wheel. Goddess Lakshmi, Your wife, sits on Your left thigh seat. You look like the embodiment of bliss, kindness and affection. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Man-Lion.]

नारसिंहाष्टकं दिव्य, मिदं काश्यपनिर्मितम्‌ ।
पठन् वैरिकृतक्लेशा, न्मुच्यते विजयी सदा ॥

Nārasiṃhāṣṭakaṃ divya, Midaṃ Kāśyapanirmitam ।
Paṭhan vairikṛtakleśān, Mucyate vijayī sadā ॥

[This prayer called Narasimha-ashtakam (eight verses) is written by Shri Datta Swami, Who was born in Kashyapa gotra. The devotee, who recites this prayer will be relieved from the difficulties caused by enemies and will always become victorious.]
