ŚRĪ VĀMANĀVATĀRĀṢṬAKAM
श्री वामनावताराष्टकम्
[Eight Verses on the Dwarf-Brāhmaṇa Boy Incarnation of God Vishnu]

ॐ नमो नारायणाय । ॐ नमो विष्णवे ।
Oṃ Namo Nārāyaṇāya । Oṃ Namo Vishnave ।

[Salutations to God Narayana, Who is God Vishnu]

शिशुं काश्यपं मुण्डितं शीर्षवृत्त-स्फुरत्ताम्रवस्त्रं भुजच्छत्रदण्डम्‌ ।
बलेर्दर्शनायावतीर्णं सुहासं, भजे नाथ नारायणं वामनं तम्‌ ॥1॥

Śiśuṃ kāśyapaṃ muṇḍitaṃ śīrṣavṛtta-
Sphurattāmravastraṃ bhujacchatradaṇḍam ।
Balerśardanāyāvatīrṇaṃ suhāsaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Vāmanaṃ Tam ॥1॥

[You came as Young brāhmaṇa boy born in the Kashyapa gotra, with Your shaven head covered by a brilliant red ceremonial cloth, an umbrella and a stick in Your hands, to see King Bali with a cheerful smile. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Dwarf-Brāhmaṇa Boy called Shri Vaamana.]

महासुन्दरं कोमलं ब्रह्मतेजो-महांभोधि मूर्तिं मनो मोहयन्तम्‌ ।
मुहुः पल्लवोष्ठस्मितं बालभिक्षुं, भजे नाथ नारायणं वामनं तम्‌ ॥2॥

Mahāsundaraṃ komalaṃ brahmatejo-
Mahāṃbhodhi mūrtiṃ mano mohayantam ।
Muhuḥ pallavoṣṭhasmitaṃ bālabhikṣuṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Vāmanaṃ Tam ॥2॥

[You, as that boy, were very beautiful and very tender. You seemed to be the embodiment of divine radiation, attracting the minds of all people. You were smiling with Your red tender leaflet-like lips. Though You appeared as a young beggar, Your extraordinary radiating beauty revealed Your divine nature. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Dwarf-Brāhmaṇa Boy called Shri Vaamana.]

बले स्सार्वभौमा त्त्रिपादै र्मितां गां, स्मितानन्तरं याचमानं सभास्थान् ।
स्ववर्चोभिराश्चर्यमग्ना न्विधाय, भजे नाथ नारायणं वामनं तम्‌ ॥3॥

Bale ssārvabhaumā ttripādair mitāṃ gāṃ,
Smitānantaraṃ yācamānaṃ sabhāsthān ।
Svavarcobhirāścaryamagnān vidhāya,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Vāmanaṃ Tam ॥3॥

[Each time You were immersing all the members of King Bali’s court in wonder, You were begging King Bali for three square feet of land on the earth after giving a beautiful smile. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Dwarf-Brāhmaṇa Boy called Shri Vaamana.]

हिनस्ति स्म यो राजपाणिस्थपात्रे, भृगो रक्षिदर्भेण दानाम्बुरोधात्‌ ।
अजानन्त मेवेव च व्याकुलास्यं, भजे नाथ नारायणं वामनं तम्‌ ॥4॥

Hinasti sma yo rājapāṇisthapātre,
Bhṛgo rakṣidarbheṇa dānāmburodhāt ।
Ajānanta meveva ca vyākulāsyaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Vāmanaṃ Tam ॥4॥

[You were piercing a harsh leaf of Halfa grass (Darbha) into the tube of holy water pot that is used for pouring water before doing charity. You were hitting the eye of Sage Bhrugu, who entered the pot, obstructing the flow of water with the intention to stop the charity that is going to be done by the King to You. You were acting as if You were unaware of the truth and were like an ordinary boy with ignorance. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Dwarf-Brāhmaṇa Boy called Shri Vaamana.]

हठाद्वर्धमानं तथैवाङ्गवेषं, भुवं खं च पादद्वये नाक्रमन्तम्‌ ।
बले रानमन्मस्तक न्यस्तपादं, भजे नाथ नारायणं वामनं तम्‌ ॥5॥

Haṭhādvardhamānaṃ tathaivāṅgaveṣaṃ,
Bhuvaṃ khaṃ ca pādadvaye nākramantam ।
Bale rānamanmastaka nyastapādaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Vāmanaṃ Tam ॥5॥

[You suddenly started growing with the same dress occupying the entire sky by one foot and the entire Earth by another foot. You were asking for the leftover third square foot of area to be occupied by Your third foot. King Bali bent and showed his head as the area for Your third foot. Immediately, You were placing Your third foot on the head of King Bali. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Dwarf-Brāhmaṇa Boy called Shri Vaamana.]

भुवर्भूद्वयाङ्घ्रिं सुवर्लोकजानुं, महस्स्थोरुमध्योज्जनं चात्मवत्से ।
तपोलोक मास्ये च सत्याख्यलोकं, भजे नाथ नारायणं वामनं तम्‌ ॥6॥

Bhuvarbhūdvayāṅghriṃ suvarlokajānuṃ,
Mahassthorumadhyojjanaṃ cātmavatse ।
Tapoloka māsye ca satyākhyalokaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Vāmanaṃ Tam ॥6॥

[You occupied Bhuuloka and Bhuvarloka by Your two feet. You occupied Suvarloka by Your knees. Your thighs occupied Maharloka. Your waist occupied Janaloka. Your chest occupied Tapoloka. Your face occupied Satyaloka. Your other foot, which occupied Earth, also occupied all the seven lower worlds. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Dwarf-Brāhmaṇa Boy called Shri Vaamana.]

पदा पीडयन्तं बलिं नम्रमौलिं, शनैः प्रापयन्तं च निम्नस्थलोकम्‌ ।
करेणाभयं वासवाय प्रदातुं, भजे नाथ नारायणं वामनं तम्‌ ॥7॥

Padā pīḍayantaṃ baliṃ namramauliṃ,
Śanaiḥ prāpayantaṃ ca nimnasthalokam ।
Kareṇābhayaṃ vāsavāya pradātuṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Vāmanaṃ Tam ॥7॥

[You were pressing King Bali, who bent his head, slowly to the third lower world called Sutala loka. All this was done by You in order to give protection to Indra, the Lord of angels, indicated by Your hand in the protection mode. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Dwarf-Brāhmaṇa Boy called Shri Vaamana.]

अहङ्कार मस्माकमेवं ह्यधस्ता, द्बलोन्मत्त मापीडयन्तं स्वभक्तम्‌ ।
सदा द्वारपालोपमं सेवमानं, भजे नाथ नारायणं वामनं तम्‌ ॥8॥

Ahaṅkāra masmākamevaṃ hyadhastād,
Balonmatta māpīḍayantaṃ svabhaktam ।
Sadā dvārapālopamaṃ sevamānaṃ,
Bhaje Nātha Nārāyaṇaṃ Vāmanaṃ Tam ॥8॥

[You, the boy, who is God Vishnu, became the gatekeeper of King Bali and started serving Your most sincere devotee! Let the same Lord Vishnu suppress down my ego also, which is not strong (due to inability to do strong deeds) but always proud due to madness, yet, highly devoted to Him, God Vishnu. I worship such Lord Narayana, who is in the form of Dwarf-Brāhmaṇa Boy called Shri Vaamana.]

इदं वामन रूपस्य, काश्यपस्याष्टकं पठन् ।
काश्यपेन कृतं भक्त्या, नम्रो भवति रक्षितः ॥

Idaṃ Vāmana rūpasya, Kāśyapasyāṣṭakaṃ paṭhan ।
Kāśyapena kṛtaṃ bhaktyā, Namro bhavati rakṣitaḥ ॥

[This prayer on God Vaamana, the incarnation of God Vishnu, who was born in Kashyapa gotra, is written by Shri Datta Swami, who is also born in Kashyapa gotra. If this prayer is recited by any devotee, such devotee will become very submissive without ego and will always be protected by God Vishnu.]
